This month’s post introduces the Financial Innovation Laboratory (FIL) of the Global Center for Social Innovation – North America (CSI-NA) and recent activities.


The CSI-NA/FIL was established in 2016 to support co-creation projects with customers in the financial sector. Projects in FIL are currently focused on blockchain and data science. One recent major achievement is part of FIL’s activity in the Hyperledger community.


Hyperledger is an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. It is a global collaboration, hosted by The Linux Foundation, with over 100 participating organizations, including leaders in finance, banking, Internet of Things, supply chains, manufacturing and Technology. 


Hitachi, a Premier Member, is part of the team of 159 engineers from 27 organizations including Hitachi, IBM and major IT vendors, developing Hyperledger Fabric. As a major contributor, FIL is proud to share the news that Hyperledger Fabric 1.0 is now available, as recently announced in a news release issued by the Hyperledger Foundation on 11 July 2017. Mr. Nao Nishijima, one of the main contributors from the CSI-NA FIL team, commented in the release, “I am delighted to see Hyperledger Fabric V1.0 released. It is a great pleasure for me to contribute to a significant step for the wider and practical application of blockchain technology for enterprise level and to support improvement and launch of innovative blockchain platform. Hitachi continues to contribute to Hyperledger community and to provide blockchain solutions for various industries.” 


CSI-NA is looking to progressively promote customer collaboration applying this production ready development of Hyperledger Fabric 1.0.  (Related article in HDS Community: “Blockchaining in Singapore” by Hu Yoshida)

Hannover Messe , one of the world’s leading trade fairs for industrial automation,  was held from April 24 to 28 at Hannover Messe in Germany. Approximately 225,000 people attended the event this year.


Hitachi showcased several OT x IT technologies for enabling smart manufacturing. The demo from Hitachi Research, showcased by the Global Center for Social Innovation-North America (CSI-NA) focused on enabling real-time visibility and intelligence into production line operations. In particular, it addressed issues such as easing the integration of new devices into industrial IoT systems, edge analytics for real-time asset health monitoring, and subscription-based notification services for connecting shop  floor events with appropriate stakeholders. The demo was part of an official Hannover Messe Industrie tour and garnered interest from both manufacturing professionals as well as students.



Apart from showcasing our technology, this year’s participation also provided Hitachi with the opportunity to capture trends in industrial IoT as well as on-the-spot feedback from users and experts. One question that was asked a lot was on Hitachi’s countermeasures to the risk of cyber-physical security attacks in an ultra-connected world, especially in relation to manufacturing plants. Security is a critical issue, and Hitachi is involved in a comprehensive initiative to secure various societal infrastructure within the H-ARC framework. Hitachi is also actively involved in relevant standardization activities. We also received several requests from university students to make our manufacturing testbed open to accelerate research in academia. We are happy to say Hitachi is working with various open innovation forums such as OpenFog Consortium .


The Center for Technology Innovation (CTI) showcased its multipurpose AI technology, where a  robot autonomously “learned” to optimize its actions to achieve a pre-specified outcome without further instructions. The technology impressed customers seeking AI applications to their businesses, and led to many deep discussions on how customer business might be improved with Hitachi AI Technology/H. These discussions suggested that this technology could be a real differentiator for customers, and contribute to accelerating collaborative creation activities with customers in Europe.

Technology at the Wheel

In January, I introduced Hitachi’s Technology for Autonomous Parking – Easier & Tighter. This month I would like to share one of the University Alliances projects that the Global Center for Social Innovation North America (CSI-NA) Automotive Products Lab (APL) joined in collaboration with Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas (HIAMS) in a partnership with the University of Michigan, Mobility Transformation Center (MTC).


“Connected Car” is one of the most exciting technology developments to happen in the automotive industry over the past 50 years. Cars are getting smarter and more communicative, thanks to advances in sensor technology, enormous data exchange and high-speed communication. The implications will have a major impact on the global automotive industry for years to come. 


In response, HIAMS, along with CSI-NA/APL and Clarion, have focused on creating new technologies for next-generation cars, including tools that assist vehicles in parking, lane changing, braking, 360-degree sensing and a whole host of other technological features that will assist customers in providing a more comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.  In order to evaluate these features in a safe and reliable manner, Hitachi established an Affiliate Membership with the University of Michigan's Mobility Transformation Center (MTC) in 2015.  The MTC operates Mcity, a unique test facility with a controlled test environment that was specifically designed to evaluate the capabilities of connected and automated vehicles and systems that will lead the way to mass-market driverless cars. HIAMS, CSI-NA/APL and Clarion are now leveraging the capabilities at Mcity in order to develop, fine tune and create the most reliable automotive component systems in the industry that will lead the way in automated mobility in the years to come.

This month,  we’d like to introduce – webSpoon, a contribution to the Pentaho Community from the Global Center for Social Innovation – North America.


Pentaho Kettle is the open source ETL engineering tool from Pentaho. It has a graphical designer called Spoon, a great tool that allows data integration from flat files and RDBMS to Hadoop and beyond to be intuitively designed. To address the needs of developers for a browser-based tool, CSI-NA developed webSpoon, an alternative to Spoon with the same look & feel. WebSpoon allows you to design and execute data integration tasks in a web browser over a network. It could also be used to expand use cases of Spoon and PDI to data security and privacy, managed PDI development environment (either on the cloud/on-premise), data integration embedded in other web apps, online collaboration, etc.

This project has been open-sourced in GitHub [1] and a Docker image is available to download from Docker Hub [2]. This is just one of many developments taking place in the Pentaho community, and is a very popular path for advanced features to reach a high level of stability and maturity while providing early access to cutting edge technology.

Hitachi is a well-known player when it comes to power transmission & distribution (T&D) sector in Japan, but for some participants at DistribuTECH, held in San Diego Convention Center (31-Jan-2 Feb),  the breadth of Hitachi’s offerings was a new discovery.  So it was a great opportunity for Hitachi’s energy people from Hitachi America, Ltd., Energy Solution Division (ESD), Hitachi Consulting Corporation (HCC), Hitachi Chemical, Hitachi T&D Solution and the Global Center for Social Innovation-North America (CSI-NA) to get together to coordinate the display of our solutions at this year’s DistribuTECH, which attracted 13,500 participants from 77 countries, 20% higher than last year!

As hoped for, the Hitachi booth generated quite a bit of interest. From CSI-NA, researchers demonstrated MicroGrid, Wind Forecasting and Distribution Operation &Maintenance Optimization collaborated with HCC, as well as Predictive Analytics.

A brief introduction of the energy solutions, below:

(1) MicroGrid:  Integrate distributed energy resources to balance demand & supply for customers who  want to 

  • realize economically efficient and commercially viable solution managing demand and supply 
  • accelerate Microgrid deployment by offering integrated energy system.


(2) Wind Forecasting: Independent Power Producers (IPP) need to predict the amount of power that can be expected from renewable sources. CSI-NA provides machine learning based solutions to predict power in 15 minute intervals for the next 24 hours. Hitachi is currently working with customers to create a data collection architecture based on Lumada.


(3) Predictive Analytics: Co-creation with customers using Hitachi advanced analytics for

  • “Condition Monitoring” and “Asset Performance Optimization” to reduce cost and increase operational efficiencies for critical assets and
  • “Predictive Maintenance” to prevent downtime from unexpected trouble and scheduled maintenance.


(4) Distribution Operation & Maintenance Optimization 

  • The “Optimized Asset Management” suite addresses the barriers that block the ability of utilities to obtain value from existing investment. The Hitachi product simplifies the preparation and blending of existing data, and includes a spectrum of tools to easily analyze, visualize, explore, report and predict. The product was built to ensure that utilities can easily translate data into actionable intelligence.

The automotive industry kicked off the New Year with one of the biggest auto shows in the world. The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), also known as the Detroit Auto Show, was attended by almost 807,000 people, January 8-21 at Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan.

Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc., a NAIAS Official Sponsor again this year, joined the show’s new AutoMobili-D exhibit (January 8-12), where automakers, suppliers and start-ups displayed their technologies on autonomous driving, connected car, electric mobility, urban mobility, and mobility services. Clarion Corporation of America and the Automotive Products Lab (APL) of the Global Center for Social Innovation – North America (CSI-NA) joined Hitachi Automotive Systems to demonstrate Hitachi’s autonomous and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) technologies.


Hitachi’s exhibit featured a branded demo car equipped with Hitachi Automotive Systems and Clarion cameras and sensors. Three large displays on the vehicle’s roof showed pedestrians detected in the vicinity in real-time. Visitors talked with experts from all three participating companies and saw a variety of company videos, including an animated video that demonstrated Hitachi’s latest remote parking technologies, accessible via smartphone application. The newly developed system automatically performs parallel and perpendicular parking as well as garage parking, using stereo and surround view cameras and vehicle control unit technologies. The vehicle has an automatic stop function that operates when its sensors detect pedestrians or obstacles in the vicinity, and the smartphone application provides a real-time display of the vehicle’s surroundings and parking options to enable the driver to operate the vehicle safely.


The Hitachi group also hosted two symposiums on the NAIAS’ AutoMobili-D main stage. Speakers included special guests from the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center and consulting firm Roland Berger who spoke on developments and ideas on future technologies for autonomous driving and smart mobility. Hitachi shared how security and big-data would be become much more important in the future as cars become connected to the cloud.


January is certainly is a busy month for the auto industry! The week before NAIAS, Las Vegas hosted the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 from January 5-8.  A global consumer electronics and technology, CES has also become a favorite showcase for the automotive industry as well as IoT.



Here too, the Automotive Products Lab (APL) of the Global Center for Social Innovation – North America (CSI-NA) joined Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. and Clarion Co. Ltd., to present and demonstrate Hitachi’s Remote Parking System.   Many auto makers were invited to experience the Remote Parking System at Hitachi’s special booth at CES.  The newly developed parking system automatically performs parallel and perpendicular parking as well as garage parking, using surround view cameras and vehicle control unit technologies. The vehicle has an automatic stop function that operates when its sensors detect pedestrians or obstacles in the vicinity. On the smart phone screen, the system provides a real-time image display of what is around the vehicle to enable the driver to operate the vehicle safely. Guests experienced the convenience of the system and were delighted by sensor accuracy enabling parking in very narrow spaces.  Hitachi also displayed controllers, sensors, communication units as well as security technologies.

The User Experience & Design (UXD) team at Hitachi America partnered IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) Institute of Design to host a design thinking workshop at the Hitachi Global Center for Social Innovation - North America (CSI-NA) on October 20 & 21, 2016.


The need for collaboration between experts from a range of fields is greater than ever before as the solutions required by customers and society grow in complexity. The workshop participants set aside two whole days for this hands-on workshop, and engaged in all phases of solution development – everything from aligning solution with organizational strategy to problem framing, critical ideation, and prototyping.


It was a rare opportunity to gain user insights, and connect with colleagues through fun games and collaborative activities for researchers and designers from every lab in Hitachi America R&D as well as the Hitachi Insight Group, to learn basic concepts in design thinking, and practice interviewing real professionals.


As diverse as our expertise may be, we are all united by our passion to overcome challenges and resolve issues, and it is always more fun to work together.  Check out the video of highlights from the workshop below.

The Hitachi Social Innovation Forum (HSIF) 2016 – Santa Clara was held on 15th November in Santa Clara, California. HSIF is a series of events held by Hitachi to introduce its activities through presentations, panel discussions, topical breakout sessions and exhibits with current as well as potential partners, to share perspectives and visions as part of its efforts to promote collaborative creation. The 2016 HSIF series began with HSIF-Myanmar in July, and a total of 16 events will be held in FY2016.


The HSIF 2016 - Santa Clara was a full-day event (Brochure) focusing on research and development. The General Session was held in the morning at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose. In the opening remarks, Mr. Nakanishi, Chairman of Hitachi, Ltd. described how we are living in an era of uncertainty, marked by constant change both positive and negative. At the same time, he described how this was also an exciting time due to the remarkable scientific breakthroughs and technological advances offering the potential to transform society. He stressed the importance of open innovation and innovation ecosystems, co-creating with partners to realize shared visions for a brighter future. Dr. Suzuki, CTO of Hitachi, Ltd., then described how Hitachi’s global research organization intended to build on the vision presented by Mr. Nakanishi, stressing the importance of the innovation ecosystem in North America. Dr. Yano, Corporate Chief Scientist from the Research & Development Group of Hitachi, Ltd., spoke on how artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT was already transforming business and stressed that the final outcome of AI should be to increase collective human happiness, giving examples of happiness ties into real world business results.



In the afternoon, approximately 200 guests participated in the Experiential Tour Session held at the Silicon Valley Research Center of the Hitachi Global Center for Social Innovation-North America (CSI-NA), and were greeted by Hitachi’s humanoid robot EMIEW3. Researchers presented solutions and demonstrations covering the Hitachi’s Collaborative Creation approach, Public Safety, Connected Car, Oil & Gas, Renewable Energy, Predictive Maintenance, Optimizedlease


Factory and Healthcare, as well as exhibits related to core technology being developed to support the various solutions: AI, Security and Robotics.

CIGRÉ – Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques, “an international non-profit Association for promoting collaboration with experts from all around the world by sharing knowledge and joining forces to improve electric power systems of today and tomorrow,” held CIGRÉ Session 2016 from 21st to 26th August in Paris, France, attended by over 8,000 participants from 93 countries.


Eight divisions from the Hitachi Group showcased power and energy solutions through 15 panels/exhibits at this major conference which is held once every two years. The Global Center for Social Innovation-North America (CSI-NA) which is part of Hitachi Global Research organization, exhibited two renewable energy-related solutions: grid stabilization technology and wind turbine power forecasting. The power forecasting technology is currently being developed through collaborative creation with an independent power producer for energy trading using Hitachi's Lumada-based Energy IoT Platform to collect, store and analyze real-time data from Wind Turbine farms. Key research output will be integrated with the Virtual Power Plant + (VPP+), being developed as a commercial solution by Hitachi Consulting Corporation in Europe.  At CIGRÉ Session 2016, a prototype of the VPP+ integration with renewable energy forecasting was demonstrated by CSI-NA.


Hitachi also hosted mini-presentations to describe the technology and customer benefits during the morning and afternoon sessions – which turned out to be hugely popular with high attendance and involvement from participants. Much interest was shown in Hitachi's Energy IoT Platform, and visitors also spent time discussing the customer co-creation approach being promoted at CSI-NA. Topics of discussion included Hitachi products, the power of software, analytics, service-oriented expertise as well as specifics on renewable energy forecasting techniques based on big data research, and collaboration with the product and services division to deliver customer value through VPP+.

What an exciting month August has been, with great performance as well as heart-moving displays of sportsmanship by athletes from all over the world at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While the spotlight is still on Brazil, I’d like to introduce CSI-North America (CSI-NA)’s activity in Brazil in exploring new business in this exciting country.


The Brazil Laboratory was established in June 2013 within Hitachi South America Ltda., and is part of the CSI-NA organization formed in April 2015. The CSI-NA Brazil Laboratory is focusing on the legacy industry sectors of agriculture and mining to enhance operations by leveraging Hitachi’s expertise and technology in IT and OT, and to explore new business opportunities in Brazil.


One successful project has been on sugarcane processing. Sugarcane, a source of sugar as well as ethanol-based fuel, is one of the most important products in the Brazilian economy. When oil prices fall, however, the industry is pressured to improve competitiveness in ethanol production.


One challenge with sugarcane is logistics - it is harvested 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week for 8 months of the year, and must be squeezed within 48 hours after harvest for maximum return. Normally over 30% of the total cost is spent on logistics, so improving logistical efficiency is critical for the industry.

CSI-NA Brazil Laboratory analyzed data from harvest, loading until carriage, and found that the waiting time of the harvester and truck was a key factor in costs. Using Hitachi’s data analytics techniques, an efficient allocation system was developed to optimize the logistic process and field-tested in cooperation with a major sugar cane factory. Initial results indicated that costs could be reduced by up to 10% and profit increased by 4.3%.

Taking the lead from the interest on my May article on IoT World 2016, this month I thought I would talk more about the Internet of Things, and how the Global Center for Social Innovation- North America (CSI-NA) at the Silicon Valley Research Center is helping secure the interconnected world.


With over five billion IoT devices connected, and twenty billion devices expected by 2020, security is a major concern. These networks of diverse systems are creating new opportunities in cities, factories and infrastructure systems, but are also creating potential for new vulnerabilities.  The research team at CSI-NA is working to improve the security of IoT-enabled solutions like Optimized Factory and Smart Transportation operations from attacks, disruptions, faults and errors by proposing innovative solutions and processes. Technologies recently proposed by CSI-NA researchers can detect unauthorized access and suspicious behavior in large IoT enabled systems within seconds of their occurrence. They blend efficient machine learning techniques with years of OT domain knowledge present in Hitachi to yield effective, reliable and robust security algorithms.



With IoT-enabled devices rapidly being adopted in industrial control systems and infrastructure, strong security standards are also vital. Participation in standardization forums gives Hitachi a chance to increase its global visibility as a serious player in IoT security and also keeps it up-to-date with the state of the art in the field. That’s why researchers from CSI-NA are participating in security standardization bodies like Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and the International Society of Automation (ISA), where security requirements for industrial automation and control systems are being established. The team at CSI-NA is working closely with Control System Platform Division and Center for Technology Innovation – Energy, to formally propose to ISA, Hitachi's Concept for Social Infrastructure Security, needed to protect our city services from the growing threats and problems of the future, and work towards its standardization.

My earlier posts introduced the grand opening of the Silicon Valley Research Center in January, some IoT topics, and design thinking activities at CSI-North America. This month I’d like to introduce another one of our very active research laboratories - the Automotive Products Research Laboratory (APL) located in the Detroit Research Center of CSI- North America, in Farmington Hills, Michigan.


You probably know that the Hitachi Group is one of the proud sponsors of Team Penske, but did you know that the Chevrolet cars, equipped with Hitachi’s fuel injection technology, have won 7 out of the 8 races so far in the 2016 season? That’s not a coincidence.   Hitachi’s Direct Injection technology has powered the Chevrolet to four consecutive IndyCar Manufacturers’ Championships (2012-2015) !



The team at APL works closely with Hitachi Automotive Systems to design and develop the fuel delivery system currently running in all Chevrolet powered cars for the Verizon IndyCar Series.


The design proposed by APL for the direct injection (DI) fuel system is used in the Chevrolet 2.2 liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 race engines in the IndyCar. These engines create between 550-700 horsepower, depending on track setup. In addition to the structural design, APL contributed to the optimization of engine performance through spray and combustion analysis to optimize the engine performance and meet the required performance criteria.

I introduced the opening of the new Global Center for Social Innovation North America office – the Silicon Valley Research Center in my first article with some photos. In this month’s article, I’d like to expand and explain how the Research Center in itself is an example of how design thinking can improve a workplace, inspire the team and facilitate the innovation process.

Designing a research-based solution is both our commitment and expertise. We apply the principle of design thinking in empathizing, ideating, and prototyping solutions for our customers. The researchers and designers in the User Experience Design Laboratory (UXD) followed these steps in designing the new office itself. They identified challenges that stand in the way of our collaboration and innovation activities, and designed physical solutions directly into the space to improve our work. One of the most prominent examples being the townhall area – an open space where office traffic converges, and everything from work and meals to informal conversation becomes a natural, everyday event.  Here is a short video for a quick insight.


We tackle customer challenges in the same way. UXD members use the Discover and Design approach in designing solutions for customers. Using our prototyping tools and foresight database, we inspire, build, and test solutions alongside our customers and help them design products and services that are sustainable, profitable, and highly engaged with in various industries.

As many of you know, the world’s largest IoT event, Internet of Things World 2016, was held at the Santa Clara Convention Center on May 11th -12th with over 10,000 attendees from the IoT industry.

Hitachi took this opportunity to announce to this community the formation of its new “Hitachi Insight Group” that will be driving Hitachi’s unified Internet of Things (IoT) business.  After the announcement, many guests visited the Hitachi booths.  Hitachi Global Research was there with 4 research presentations from the Global Center for Social Innovation - North America, among the eight demonstrations showcased by Hitachi.


1. Oil & Gas  – showcased the live insight solution for oil field operations where we demonstrated the business goals, system architecture design using Pentaho, and different analytics applications that we have built. Specifically, we introduced the production characterization application and the enhanced oil recovery application based on water injection. Visitors were intrigued by our solution, and interest was expressed by some component (sensor) providers to partner/provide services.

2. Connected Car demonstrated three features . Simulator - collection of real-time data from a simulated car, events, and geo location, also showed how two KPIs were derived and showed in real-time. Driver Behavior - based on the instrumented data from the cars, demonstrated the ability to determine who is driving the car using finger-print. Integration of ‘design-time’ product development and manufacturing(e.g. shock absorbers) - combining a ‘simulated’ version of the product with real-time data to determine ‘failure prediction’. The basis for this was the combining physical model simulation with big data analytics platform.  Many visitors were surprised to learn that Hitachi was a significant player in the automotive market.

3. Predictive Maintenancea demonstration was given of a predictive maintenance solution with a suite of technologies that have been applied to a variety of use cases across different verticals. The technologies included equipment monitoring, performance analytics, maintenance analytics, failure prediction, and operation & maintenance (O&M) recommendation. Considerable interest was shown in Hitachi’s solution in this area and in the broad spectrum of use cases presented at the booth. Visitors expressed a range of interests from being customers of a predictive maintenance solution to partnering with us in the predictive maintenance space.

4. Fleet management - demonstrated three parts: live monitoring, simulation based optimal truck assignment and automatically truck route construction. In the mining or construction industry, trucks, shovels and other mining equipment are expensive and dominate the operational cost. We showed how improving equipment efficiency could reduce daily operational costs.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) has become synonymous with the latest and coolest in the mobile and telecom industry. Every year this spectacular event draws thousands of people from all over the world to the heart of Barcelona, and this year again, Hitachi was there, along with 2,200 exhibiting companies, 3,600 members of the media and analysts, and over 100,000 visitors from 204 countries. Many of the exhibitions centered on the Internet of Things (IoT). Different IoT verticals, related to Hitachi’s concept of Social Innovation were present.




Hitachi presence at MWC highlights the cooperation and synergy between different Hitachi business units such as Hitachi Data Systems, Hitachi Consulting Corporation, Social Innovation Business Unit, IoT Division, IT Platform Division, Hitachi Communication Technologies America and the Global Research organization (Global Center for Social Innovation and Center for Technology Innovation). This year the Hitachi Group put up 7 demos (click the demo list), covering a wide range of topics from big data analytics to 5G Cellular and IoT to smart cities and public safety.  Hitachi also participated in two official MWC panels featuring smart cities and digital transformation, and was also one of the companies featured in the official MWC IoT tour.

The 5G Cellular and IoT demo was conceptualized at the Hitachi America R&D Division of CSI - North America along with Hitachi Data Systems, and subsequently CSI-North America was a technical advisor in the refinement and finalization of the demos. The churn prediction demo done in partnership with SAP was also supported in part by CSI-North America.”

The Hitachi booth was a huge success, with around 1,000 visitors visiting the booth.  Hitachi received glowing reviews from industry members and think tanks such as Machina Research, as well as very favorable social media impact with over 2.4 million impressions.  From an R&D perspective, this year’s participation provided an opportunity to capture future trends in IoT and mobile, highlighting use cases of interest to potential customers. These insights will be valuable for Global Research in deciding the direction of future research and co-creation activities.
