Comparing the SVP Performance with SVPA for Virtual Storage Platform 5000 Series (VSP 5000 Series) Storage Systems

Recently, I had the opportunity to ensure the quality of the replacement for the onboard Service Processor (SVP) that resides in our Virtual Storage Platform 5000 series (VSP 5000 series) enterprise storage systems. The testing was to determine whether the new SVP model performs comparably or better than the original.

First, we ran 10 common storage management tasks using the Storage Navigator software with the original SVP. Next, on the same storage system, we swapped the original SVP with the new SVPA. Then, we ran the same 10 tasks again.

In this blog, I provide the results of performing these common storage management tasks using Storage Navigator.

Note: The only difference between SVP and SVPA is the Windows OS. All of the hardware specifications are the same.

·         SVP: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2019 LTSC

·         SVPA: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC

Test Procedure

We ran the following test items five times and calculated the average time taken to complete each task.

Test No.

Test items to run on SVP and SVPA

1

Create a new PG [Raid-6 (6D+2P)].

2

Create 10 basic volumes of 1TB in the PG.

3

Create a new DP (Dynamic Provisioning) pool of 5TB in the basic volumes.

4

Create 250 new DP-VOLs of 128GB in the DP Pool.

5

Delete the DP-VOLs.

6

Create two LUNs (logical unit numbers) with four ports on one LDEV (Logical Device) (eight LUNs with four ports).

7

Expand the DP Pool by 5TB.

8

Click Refresh.

9

Delete the DP Pool.

10

Collect DUMP.

Test Results

Summary

As you can see, the new SVPA outperformed the original SVP in all test scenarios. It’s surprising to see how a single version OS upgrade could produce 20% higher performance across the board with Storage Navigator.
