Hitachi Stakes Intellectual Property Claims

Blog Post created by Michael Hay Employee on Jun 6, 2015

manny - 1_Snapseed.jpgAt the HDSConnect event earlier this year we allowed users to explore lots of things including Hitachi Research prototypes/technology previews, drive a virtual Hitachi Construction hauler, take a photo with Manny our healthy guy, and more things than I can list.  One thing that users could explore was Hitachi's patent prowess in areas like Storage, Big Data Analysis Foundation Technologies, and Big Data Analysis Technologies. (Note there is a subtle difference in the last two from a key word perspective.  As with many in the space of Intellectual Property, some times subtle things matter.)

Since there have been a few  tweets and mentions of what we've been doing here I thought I'd share some high level descriptions of our accomplishments.  (A special thanks to Hiroshi Kawano for helping to compile the descriptions below.)

  • Big Data Analysis Technology Patent Applications:
    • This is the macro level as it includes "Big Data Analysis Foundation Technology" and “Stream Type Data Processing Technology”
    • Hitachi has almost 2X more patent applications than Oracle and Microsoft when taken together, and
    • Hitachi > EMC <- this is true in many ways
  • Big Data Analysis Foundation Technology Patent Applications:
    • #1 worldwide for patent applications in big data analysis foundation technologies (includes US, Japan, Europe, China and South Korea
    • When considering key Big Data Technology categories such as Distributed file systems, Parallel distributed systems, and Data falsification protections
      • Hitachi has almost 2X more patent applications than IBM,
      • Hitachi has almost 2X more patent applications than Oracle and Microsoft when taken together, and
      • Hitachi > EMC
  • Big Data Stream Type Data Processing Technology Patent Applications
    • Hitachi has almost 2X more patent applications than Oracle and Microsoft when taken together, and
    • Yet again Hitachi > EMC

Beyond the areas in Big Data Hitachi continues to make investments in Storage Systems innovations.  More specifically in the past decade we've obtained more than 3500 patents in Storage Systems across the US, Germany, UK, Japan, China and Russia.  Yet again our efforts here exhaust EMC's IP prowess!  The importance of this?  Well I look at patents and patent applications as leading indicators of business intent and you can clearly see our intention.  While many other factors play in to making a successful and sustainable business, I think that a strong and respectful Intellectual Property practice is a necessary ingredient.
