VMworld Sneak Peek: Nothing Secret About It

Blog Post created by Hu Yoshida Employee on Aug 18, 2015

It’s the third week of August, and like past years, we are gearing up for VMworld San Francisco, where we plan to launch new storage and converged solutions aimed at accelerating our customers’ journey to hybrid cloud, while reducing complexity and improving operational efficiency.

Below I've provided a snapshot of what we’ll be demonstrating at the big event!

VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (VVol) solutions for block (VSP G1000) and file (Hitachi NAS Platform) storage – We will showcase the HDS implementation of VVols and policy-based management framework on our industry-leading VSP G1000 enterprise storage system and Hitachi NAS Platform. HDS teamed up with VMware as a strategic partner to provide customers with the benefits of application-based automation and granular virtual machine (VM) lifecycle management for block storage systems i.e. VSP G1000, G600, G400, G200 and HNAS platform. Legacy Existing Hitachi storage systems can surface capabilities by virtualizing behind either HNAS or VSP G1000 systems.

In the limited span since general availability, we have received encouraging response from customers, who want to test and migrate from VMFS to VVol-based management. You can read some of the most frequently asked questions on HDS and VVOLs here.

In virtualized environments, the importance of simple data protection can’t be overstated. Hitachi Virtual Infrastructure Integrator 3.0 (aka V2I) has received some significant upgrades in order to provide better backup and recovery capabilities for VMs deployed on HDS block and file storage. Application-consistent VM backup/restore can be managed from your very familiar vCenter console. With the latest release, V2I adds support for  the complete Hitachi storage family (Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) G1000, G200, G400, G600, HUS VM and HNAS), including converged solutions like Unified Compute Platform (UCP) family. VMs on VMFS and NFS datastores can be protected efficiently.

The key benefits for virtual server admins using V2I are:

  • Scheduled and instantaneous VM backup and restore services using integrated storage snapshot services (HTI and File Clone) for Block and File VMware deployments
  • The ability to meet backup and recovery SLAs at VM-level granularity (more RPO’s, better RTO) while reducing storage backup capacity consumption
  • VM and Application consistent backup and VM and user empowered file level recovery with integrated VMware UI experience
  • Additional VM storage infrastructure services to ensure optimized best practice environment

A Fortune 500 Manufacturer customer said "Hitachi V2I provides us with flexibility and operational efficiencies which were sorely missing in our previous backup solution. File cloning with de-duplication are real game-changers for our rapidly evolving virtualization environment. Looking forward to deploying de-duped replication for DR and shrinking our RPO and RTO." My colleague Paul Morrissey has blogged about V2I in detail.

HDS is a leading infrastructure provider in enterprise storage and converged systems with utmost value around trusted high-availability solution. In order to deliver on our commitment to our customers, we partnered with VMware to provide orchestrated recovery capabilities to stretched cluster deployments of VSP G1000s using VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM). Active-active cluster configurations of our storage systems with SRM provides high availability with read-write from both sites along with ability to automate recovery from disasters. SRM orchestration provides enhanced automation in restoring infrastructure in the event of disaster.

Do NOT forget to register for VMworld breakout session STO6284, in which Paul Morrissey, Director Product Management, will cover all these new product initiatives in his session, New Ideas for Simply Better VM Automation, Business Continuity and  Data Protection with and without Virtual Volumes.

To provide enhanced value to customers, we provide deep integration with VMware cloud management and operational management solutions. We will demonstrate our range of plug-ins and adapters for VMware solutions such as vRealize Operations Manager, vRealize Log InSight Manager, vRealize Orchestrator for our converged and storage platforms. More information on HDS plug-ins for VMware can be found here.

Stay tuned for more on VMworld and please visit booth #905 to explore exciting world of HDS!
