One of the biggest pain points for Oracle DB customers is the licensing cost.  This is exasperated with todays high core count CPUs and virtualization on VMware.  Running an Oracle DB on VMware or any software based hypervisor is really a double edged sword.

  1. Oracle official support for the DB running in these environments is foggy and best effort, They reserve the right to tell you to put the DB on bare metal.
  2. Oracle will force the customer to license every core in the ESX/hyperV/acropolis/kvm/ cluster no matter how few virtual CPUs are assigned to the DB VM

 

What is not widely known and certainly not publicized by Oracle is that there is a legal Oracle way to virtualize your Oracle DB’s and utilize only the cores needed and even create a capacity on demand platform.  This is done via Oracle VM x86 Hard Partitioning Feature. OVM is license free and only needs a very modest oracle support contract which is priced the same as Oracle Linux.

Oracle Orion Test Results

Oracle Orion is a tool for predicting the performance of an Oracle database without having to install Oracle or create a database. Unlike other I/O calibration tools, Oracle Orion is expressly designed for simulating Oracle database I/O workloads using the same I/O software stack as Oracle. Orion can also simulate the effect of striping performed by Oracle Automatic Storage Management.

This solution integrates many innovative technologies from Hitachi Vantara and Oracle. To create an Oracle database cloud service, this environment uses Hitachi Unified Compute Platform CI with Oracle Virtual Machine and Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) Cloud Control 13c. Unified Compute Platform CI includes Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G900 (VSP G900), Hitachi Advanced Server DS220 with Intel Xeon Gold 6140 processors for storage and computing resources, and Hitachi Advanced Server DS120 with Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors for the management servers.     A large bank customer was looking for high performance Oracle database solutions to upgrade their current production environments in multiple locations. They had tested Oracle "Engineered System" Exadata, and inquired a high end storage vendor for array performance, and then came to us for a PoC in early July this year. We proved to the customer that a small system configuration of G1500 with 32 x 7TB high-density Flash Module Drives, and two small half width CB2500 520H B4 blades and two PCIe expansion blades can far exceed their performance criteria and meet the budget requirement.

    By comparing results, according to the customer, the large single instance Oracle database running on our PoC environment outperformed the Oracle Exadata system by 41% with OLAP workloads.

    For OLTP workloads, the Hitachi solution achieved significant better results than  Oracle Exadata X6-2's.

    We got a feedback from a vendor of commercial performance benchmarking product when we're preparing and testing Oracle solution with the small VSP G1500 - "If you really loaded 2 x 8 TByte in less than 90 minutes, you are using an extreme fast system. I have never seen such a load rate before!"The vendor started to believe the fact when we shared event logs and performance test results. That benchmarking product is being used by many enterprise storage, server, or solution appliance vendors around the globe including Oracle Corporation. Hitachi VSP G1500 All Flash configuration is the true performance king of All Flash Arrays (AFA)!!!

 

    Unlike an "Engineered System", VSP G1500 used in the Hitachi solution has many proven array based software features for mission critical database applications,  i.e. 3-DC Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. 3-DC with GAD (Global-Active Device) is a great fit for Oracle RAC on extended distance cluster deployment.

Architecture of Hitachi Unified Compute Platform 6000 for Oracle Real Application Clusters with SMP Server Blades and Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1500

     A single Oracle 12c RAC database running on two small blades servers can perform more than 2 million IOPS at 1ms or lower latency. This is a great news to many enterprise customers - not only to support their heavy day-to-day database workloads, but also to handle large monthly or quarterly batch jobs. Many mission critical databases often get workload spikes once or a few times a year, i.e. during holiday shopping seasons for online retailers.  Spare performance capability of IT infrastructure becomes a huge burden. With this Hitachi UCP 6000 for Oracle solution, customers do not need to spend extra for standby infrastructure.

   

    This solution uses two Hitachi CB2500 520H B4 half width blades, two PCIe expansion blades for extra HBAs, two Brocade G620 switches, a single controller G1500 with 34x 7TB high density FMDs. A total 88 physical CPU cores are used on the blade servers.

 

For comparison the Cisco/Pure FlashStack 8-node Oracle RAC solution uses 8 Cisco UCS B-series B200 M4 blades servers and a total of 224 physical CPU cores.

  

    Based on the Oracle Technology Global Price List released on June 1, 2017, the Hitachi solution can save more than 9.5 millions US dollars Oracle licensing cost on "Enterprise Edition" and "Real Application Cluster" option over Cisco/Pure solution!!

  

    The Hitachi solution can also perform 4x or higher IOPS with 1ms or lower latency-

    For the Hitachi solution, there is room to grow as the size of the G1500 used is about 25% of the maximum VSP G1500 configuration.A CB2500 blade server chassis can have up to eight 520H B4 blades with 8 PCIe expansion blades.

 

 

Slob performance results from Cisco/Pure Solution -

Cisco/Pure 8-node Oracle RAC solution can only scale up to 64 SLOB users, beyond that latency increases quickly.

Hitachi Validated configuration is tested on Hitachi Xaas Foundation for Oracle Databases.

This Hitachi cloud solution for Oracle provides flexibility to deploy storage and compute resources based on your unique business requirements. This cloud solution features simple provisioning, chargeback/showback, and a centralized user interface using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) Cloud Control 13c. Cloud Foundation provides reliability, high availability, scalability, and performance while processing small-scale to largescale Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) workloads. The database and application servers E-Business Suite run on Oracle VM 3.4.1. The operating system for the virtual machines is Oracle Linux 7.2. The Oracle E-Business Suite version is 12.2.6, which also includes Oracle Database 12c R1.

 

This provides rapid deployment of E-Business Suite applications from a basic configuration of a single node to a complex multi node application with Oracle RAC. The following are the highlights of this E-Business Suite solution:
