Improve infrastructure and information management, protection and planning for your Oracle databases on Hitachi converged or storage solutions

Managing a growing Oracle database that supports mission-critical applications is challenging enough without having to consider how to protect those valuable information assets, or optimize the infrastructure underneath. Our customers are using our Hitachi UCP converged and Hitachi Unified/Enterprise range of storage platforms to run their physical/virtualized Oracle databases.


In addition, HDS has a growing portfolio of Oracle management tool integrations (aka adapters) to extend access to the data/ functionality of our storage and converged solutions for Oracle database administrators, and to make the job of administration simpler and more effective. Hitachi can enable you to protect, manage and optimize your infrastructure to get the most out of your investments.






HDS has made significant efforts to simplify the management of Oracle database on Hitachi Platforms and expand its portfolio of Oracle integrated adapters.  With the introduction this year of the Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle Enterprise manager – Database Cloning, HDS has increased our portfolio to six Oracle Adapters.


Combined with Hitachi storage solutions that deliver improved efficiency, centralized management, and a rich feature set,  Hitachi storage solutions combined with Oracle integrated adapters helps  avoid both scheduled and unscheduled downtime, and  ensure that Oracle environments can scale quickly and easily to accommodate rapid business growth.


Our tight integration with Oracle management tools is designed to help customers easily manage the storage infrastructure for Oracle database applications through the database lifecycle of Deployment, Management, Protection, Cloning, and Archival.

For example, to instantly deploy virtualized Oracle, we have the Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle VM (OVM).  Oracle VM Provides integrated management and automatic provisioning of virtual machines.  Oracle VM Manager, included with Oracle VM, provides integrated in-depth health and performance monitoring, configuration management and lifecycle automation. The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle VM helps customers simplify the management and protection of their Oracle environments maximum operational efficiency.  It offers these capabilities for both virtual and physical infrastructure, for both Oracle and non-Oracle applications.




To help DBAs proactively monitor the hardware infrastructure, we have the Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) plug-in.  OEM is the “Dashboard” to manage the Oracle environment.  OEM provides an integrated view of Hitachi storage resources for monitoring capacity utilization, performance metrics and alerts.


To help DBAs reuse the storage not used by Oracle database, we have the Oracle ASRU plug-in.  ASRU writes zeroes to the space freed by compression, and then resizes the ASM disks to their original size.


To provision storage for virtualized Oracle, we have the Oracle VM Storage Connect Plug-in.  As mentioned above, OVM provides integrated management and automatic provisioning of virtual machines.


Data Protection


To speed the backup and recovery of Oracle databases using  RMAN, we have the Oracle RMAN Adapter.  RMAN simplifies backup and recovery of Oracle Databases and minimizes backup time by integrating snap and clone replication technology and improves host performance by moving the RMAN backup load to a dedicated backup server.


To protect and provide disaster recovery for Oracle database we have Hitachi Data Instance Director (HDID).  Through its unified, workflow-based policy engine, the data managed by HDID can be used for backup, archive, disaster recovery, test and development, and many other purposes. HDID also automates and orchestrates Hitachi storage-based copy technologies, including snapshots, clones and replication.


For Oracle on VMs, we have Virtual Infrastructure Integrator (V2I) to manage operational backup of VM based Oracle database infrastructure. Between HDID-V2I and RMAN integrated backup, we provide a holistic solution across both backup, VM and application teams.




Oracle’s Database Server is key component to many of the largest enterprise applications.  Consequently, Oracle DBA’s are constantly seeking tools that will help them reduce the backup window and streamline the copy creation process to improve the efficiency of the business.  Most organization that run Oracle regularly create disk based clones of the database for multiple purposes.  These include cloning a production database for testing, cloning or creating copies of a “test” instance to apply patches, creating copies for business intelligence or data mining, or creating copies for disaster recovery or backup.


As many of these process involve a test/development environment, the Oracle DBA is tasked with maintaining a whole separate environment that is needed to be kept in synch with production.  The DBA often chooses to regularly clone Oracle instances and then apply those clones to the test environment.  These processes and task are laborious and often involve time and effort on both the SAN administrator and the Oracle DBA.




Finally, to archive historical data, we have the Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter. This is an end-to-end solution that enables administrators to streamline the management of onsite and cloud-based content throughout its lifecycle with Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) storage.  Our Oracle WebCenter Content Adapter (OWC) is tightly integrated with Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle VM, to enable customers to easily manage the Oracle infrastructure deployed on Hitachi Storage solutions.  The Hitachi Storage Adapter for Oracle WebCenter Content provides an enriched experience for administrators managing on-site and cloud-based data as they use Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) for storage.


Oracle WebCenter acts as the front-end of the system and provides the user interface, while HCP handles storage issues such as retention for archival purposes, reducing space for backups, and so on. Though OWC can natively handle the content repository functions, the Hitachi storage adapter makes it possible for HCP to offer more robust storage management for data used in Web-based operations.
