Copy Data Management (CDM) is defined in different ways, depending on what is being sold. For example, Actifio originally coined the phrase to describe its solution that provided a “golden copy” of each data file to reduce the proliferation of copy data. Dell EMC introduced a copy data management solution that provides visibility and reporting of the copy data. And IBM recently introduced a solution based on snapshot management.
We take a broader view. A single copy cannot meet all requirements, especially across locations, and can require expensive infrastructure to support access demands. Visualization is important, but automating actions to alleviate the pains of copy data is more important. And snapshots are only one way of creating data copies; a CDM solution should cover snapshots, clones, backups and other copy mechanisms.
Hitachi Vantara defines copy data management as a method for creating, controlling and reducing the number of copies of data that an organization stores. It includes provisioning copies, or virtual copies, for several use cases, including backup, business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR), and data repurposing for other secondary functions such as DevOps, financial reporting, e-discovery and much more.
This is important because data growth is only accelerating as the world becomes fully digitized. For every new file, record, or object that is created, many copies may be generated to satisfy secondary business processes.
Hitachi Data Instance Director (HDID) has been solving this challenge for organizations for several years, reducing the costs of secondary storage while greatly improving data availability, resiliency and risk mitigation. Make Better Use of Your Backup Data
When organizations embark on their digital transformation journey, it is imperative that they modernize their approach to data management. The old ways simply cannot meet today’s always-available requirements.
HDID can automate the provisioning of backup copies for other uses, automatically refresh them, and then automatically expire them, all with no additional performance impact on the production environment and while maintaining user access controls. For example, you may want to provide weekly copies of a large application database to your development, test and QA teams. Rather than taking the time and effort to create these copies manually from the production system, HDID can mount virtual copies to virtual machines using the backup copy it maintains as the data source.
