In the continuing series on Digital Transformation for Communications, Media & Entertainment, Part 3 will focus what Telecom companies are experiencing with the aspects of Digital Transformation and how the rapid changes in consumer behavior on media consumption change how content is delivered and consumed.

Telecom and Cable Operators have an important role in the business of connected societies within their regional and countries they operate in to provide the best experience for the customers and businesses they serve.  As consumers change their habits towards mobile computing for just about all aspects of their daily lives including entertainment, shopping, banking, security, payments, messaging, and voice calls, the quality of these experiences becomes a primary objective in acquiring, serving, and maintaining these customers.  The challenging contrast of mobile networks that range between 3G and 4G LTE that have continuously variable levels of mobile subscribers and congestion affect the quality of the intended services.  New operating models involving vRAN, vEPC, SDN, NFV (basically software defined functions of most all aspects of a mobile cell interchanges bring aspects of Digital Transformation for the Telecom operator.

With the advent of emerging 5G networks across the world, new business models and consumption characteristics will further Transform the global Telecom companies to become the primary broadcasters of entertainment content, primary internet service providers for consumers as the anticipated speeds may be faster and more ubiquitous at scale than fixed broadband wifi in a given location.  Real-time services will redefine the consumer experience and expectations of dependence upon the Telecom to provide high QoS and QoE to provide comprehensive operations to the subscriber base and attract new customers.

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality also have a future high impact to the Telecom network and evolve the consumer experience in their existing environment and enhance new models of entertainment and learning.  High resolution, high frame rate video for consumer streaming video entertainment for both live and on-demand stored video will make use of high bandwidth networks that the Telecom operators will provide with 5G networks and change the landscape of broadcast video.

Digital Transformation in the global Telecom sector will enable the Tier 1 and Tier 2 Telecom operators to become in the forefront of modern Social Innovation with the definition of the Telecom being the backbone of connected consumers and enterprises.
