The Telecom Edge Cloud

Telecoms in 2018 have a unique position in their respective markets to create the most prolific set of cloud services the world has yet to see using the connectivity they already have with 4G LTE, connectivity they are going to have with 5G, and with a fast developing architecture known as the Telecom Edge Cloud.  There are many products and services that have the word 'edge' in them that are supposed to provide some enhanced level of digital service to consumers and businesses and can be connected to the digital service from 'everywhere'.  With the advancement of new services that require lower latency and high bandwidth such as connected/autonomous vehicle, ATSC 3 video, e-medicine, and real-time IoT centric smart cities, the need for Edge Clouds will increase over time as 5G networks are built simultaneously. 

 

Edge Clouds by their definition are decentralized and exist in two forms, Macro Edge and Micro Edge.  Macro Edge are  larger data centers that more regional such as a metro area or city level, Micro Edge are data centers that are installed at the base-stations of the mobile network and will number in the hundreds or thousands in a given Telco network.  The Telecom Edge Cloud enables a form of computing architecture known as Multi-Access Edge Computing or MEC which is a standard from the ETSI.  MEC can enable true cloud services at the edge and optimize delivery by real-time data-driven location based placement caching of services that are closest to the device of consumption at the moment in time of service.  This can reduce backhaul traffic, increase response time significantly, and enable services to be more fluid in their operation.  The Telecom Edge Cloud will compete heavily with the commodity Cloud with the advanced decentralized architecture, ultra-low latency, and data-driven services that enhance our daily lives.
