i want to know if we can use any of the storage ports in the VSP. In the present configuration we are using only CL-6B and CL-6D. Is it possible to use any other ports for the Host mapping ?.
Storage port at VSP can use mainly target port,
if you're configured like remote replication, that port also support intiator or RCU target.
Any port can be used, there is no issues.
I agree with both of you, we can use any of the port of VSP, chk on one condition if it is a target or not and it is not used for replication or external configuration
thank you all ,that was quite helpful as i had no idea if the ports can be used randomly considering leaving the ports for replication untouched.
one last thing ........if i am using storage ports 6B and 6D for a number of host groups , will it not be a bottleneck for the hosts ?? or shouldn't i be using other ports out of the 28 storage ports ???
Okay when u plan to use port: things to remember ;
-> Multipathing/ redundant ports ( one port from each cluster Example 1B/2B)
->You have to analyze the the load, using Tuning manager, on the ports and see it the load is okay (Your bottle neck concern will be address here; through put shuld be in limits)
-> As it is VSP you can use any port (other than explicitly used) for provisioning ( all the CHA's have special ASIC for IO operation)
A piece of advice
When you select ports dont select both from even or odd
for example you can select one starting with even number and other with odd number
as the ports will be on two different clusters.
for instance you can have port 6b and 7b, but 6b and 6d would not be a good choice
as both will be on the same cluster.

Actually the Ports Even and Odd corresponds to Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 of the Hitachi VSP. So if we want redundancy for both the clusters we should have to configure zoning for the corresponding ports. Example CL6-B and CL6-D of say Cluster 2 will correspond to CL5-B and CL5-D of Cluster 1. Its necessary to lay the FC cables this way so that we can have a clear layout and understanding of the connections. Hope this will help.
