I know we can upgrade HCP online without an user outage, but this is supposed to take longer than an offline upgrade. Could someone remind me why that is the case? Does the G10 hardware make any part of the upgrade faster compared to the CR210/220s.
Online upgrade is now the preferred and recommended method. Changes to the upgrade code have made online upgrades significantly faster per node, and will likely result in a quicker upgrade time than offline.
The offline upgrade provides the capability to rollback the upgrade, this feature is not available for online upgrade. If the capability to rollback is required, you must use offline upgrade. This rollback feature requires backing up the metadata database, if the system has a high object count, this operation can take a significant length of time. Since online upgrade doesn't need to backup the db, it can actually take less time to complete an online upgrade than an offline upgrade would have taken on the same system, even doing one node at a time.
In regards to the question about a hardware advantage. The G10 has an advantage over the HCP 500XL if SSD's are used for the database. Both the 500XL and G10 have an advantage over an HCP 500, the internal database disks on the G10 and 500XL provide the advantage in this case.
