I'm trying to find out if external arrays using UVM support VAAI primitives, or is VAAI only supported on the primary array?
Hi Sam - UNMAP is not supported. Here is the footnote from VMware's HCL for Hitachi storage virtualization:
Footnotes :ESXi does not support automatic storage space reclamation of deleted files/virtual disks.
Space reclamation can be initiated using VMware command line tools.
Refer to KBs http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2057513 & http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2014849 for explanation and details on VAAI Thin Provisioning Space Reclamation support. - See more at: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=san&productid=21922&deviceCategory=san&details=1&partner=39&arrayTestConfigs=27&pFeaturesCat=8&isSVA=0&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc#sthash.SvI1zxdz.dpuf
Once virtualized, VAAI primitives are available on the external storage through the primary array. The supported primitives are: Thin Provisioning, HW Assisted Locking, Full Copy, Block Zero.
Thank you. I guess unmap is not supported?
Thanks again for the info. Very helpful.
