Customer asked if he could somehow use Kibana for visualization. They use Elastic Search for log analysis and some Kibana visualization. HCI looks good for them, however only search is not enough.
HCI does utilize Kibana for visualizing performance data. The Dashboard service is initially disabled by default, but if you scale it up to 1 or more instances, you can use it to search and visualize HCI performance data. The types of data stored there (and the index names to search in Kibana) include: metrics (metrics-*), document failures (failure), events (event-*), and access logs (access-*).
Here is an example dashboard created and viewed in HCI with some data on document failures:
Using Kibana with user data is on our roadmap.
Where we can expect this analytical functionality?
Customer wants to use indexes produced by HCI for analytics like in below
https://www.elastic.co/products/kibana, https://www.graylog.org/features, https://www.splunk.com/en_us/products/premium-solutions/user-behavior-analytics.html, https://www.splunk.com/en_us/products/premium-solutions/it-service-intelligence.html.
Without analytics HCI with a search is not complete for them. They use tools like above in test/dev for bank applications.
This particular customer is interested in analytics, most likely in time series information, logfile data. Search here is a MEANS to that END. Imagine if I were searching for all emails where you and I were on the 'To' line. I don't need Kibana to visualize that.... :-). As Jared mentioned in his reply, we are looking to add Visualization to indexing results where it makes sense.
One other thing I would add to this thread, especially if the roadmap is an issue. Ask the customer if they would be willing to use Banana. It came out of the Kibana project and is basically a port of Kibana to work with all kinds of series-based data in Solr. You can access it here: GitHub - lucidworks/banana: Banana for Solr - A Port of Kibana
Thanks for this reply.
As I am not a tech person few questions here.
Do you mean they could do it now not waiting for product update?
If so, and Banana could work with indexes created by HCI, should customer use HCI index or external Solr index?
What about authentication and access to indexes by Banana/users when the security is kept by HCI?
