We may need to deliver SSD drives with no compression (as a service). We would like to replace those Array Groups with SSD or FMD and utilize compression when it becomes available.
There are a number of ways to go about it.
Let's say that you have an existing pool without compression. In it are many v-vols that are presented to hosts.
If you are adding FMC drives where the compression is done in the drive, then you would:
The addition and shrink are slow processes because they take a lower priority than host I/O. I would shrink out one LDEV at a time to accomplish the shrink. Make sure that you have enough performance on the FMC drives if your end state has fewer spindles than you started with.
If you are adding SSD/FMD drives where there is no compression capability on the drive and instead are doing DKC/MPB based compression then you would create a new pool and use volume migration.
Both of these Methods are ONLINE and non-disruptive to hosts.
Thanks Mark, this is very helpful.
