What are the latest object data manager (ODM) definition and quick reference updates for IBM AIX?
IBM® AIX (versions 4.3.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3)
Object Data Manager (ODM) is a database of system and device configuration information that is part of the IBM® AIX operating system.
The ODM update supplied by Hitachi Data Systems is a fileset that contains device definitions that allow IBM AIX to properly recognize HDS devices and set the required default settings.
MPIO vs non-MPIO
There are 2 types of ODM updates, predicated on whether MPIO is used or not.
Multi-Path I/O (MPIO) is a feature available with IBM AIX 5.2 and later and is active by default. If a device has an MPIO-capable device driver, the device can have 1 or more physical connections (paths) that IBM AIX will manage. Alternatively, for non-MPIO environments such as IBM AIX versions prior to 5.2 (or if HDLM is used for multi-pathing or no multi-pathing) then a non-MPIO ODM update is used, which is termed a non-default MPIO ODM.

The Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2000 family supports native MPIO (unlike other DF products). However, ODM update 6000I must be installed in order for AMS 2000 to support native MPIO.

Wow this brought back memories of hand editing the ODM on AIX for keeping systems healthy. I also recall recovering a Solaris machine from the following command 'rm -rf . /' with some clever usage of tape drives and 'dd.'
