What are " rules of sparing " in a Hitachi VSP G1000 system?
In all VSP G or F models the rules of sparing are:
A drive can spare for another if both of the following conditions are met:
1) Capacity: The spare drive is the same or larger capacity.
Note that a 6.4TB FMD DC2 and a 7TB FMD HD are identical capacity. (Unfortunately) The FMD DC2 models are named using the base2 capacity and the FMD HD models are named using the base10 capacity (which results in some confusion)
In the case of HDD, the rotation speed must be the same
In the case of SSD, it must be SSD
In the case of FMD, it must be the same type (A vs B)
Type A is the original FMD 1.6 & 3.2TB (part name ends with “M”)
Type B is the FMD DC2 1.6, 3.2, & 6.4TB (part name ends with “N”) or FMD HD 7 & 14TB (part name ends with “P”)
