It is not recommended to implement hardware made by different vendors in a single SAN. Brocade switches have problems communicating with Cisco ones. Sun HBAs does not work properly with HDS and HP midrange arrays. Load balancing software (like HDLM) supports only tested combinations of drivers, HBAs, FC switches, and disk arrays, etc.

Why?

Fiber Channel is a standard, and everybody must produce compatible hardware to work in different combinations. But Emulex, for examle, offers different version of HBAs firmware for connecting to different disk arrays. Does it mean that different vendors use their own extentions of FC protocol? Or what?
