This is about as off topic as it gets....
Was down in South Beach (Miami) today and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) was coming in from the beach - but not dressed like this:
Seen any other celebs recently?
Shall we assume then that you watch this series? If so, why do you like it?
Sure do. Guess I've always liked fantasy/medieval stuff. David Eddings, etc.
I like fantasy TV/Movies as much as every one else, I like certain character types more than others and I have my favourites..... but I just don't get fandom. I care very little for celebrities. I guess I don't feel I know the person themselves since they're playing someone elses character. I would rather meet a great scientist, mathematician or philanthropist given the opportunity.
I geeked out when sitting next to Bruce Schneier on a flight from London a few years ago. I think he was genuinely surprised I recognized him, but given that I've seen him speak and own a couple of his books he was quite recognizable. I wanted to pick his brain about all things crypto but didn't want to annoy him.
I've never sat next to anyone interesting on a plane.... sadly!
Wise move...Bruce can be quite cranky.
I once encountered Richard Wilson (aka Victor Meldrew) in a hotel pool in Glasgow. I was sorely tempted to say "I don't believe it", but was able to restrain myself.
When you say "encountered..."???
I met Inspector Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) from the BBC's "Midsomer Murders"when I was asked to conduct a brass band in an episode of the show.
More recently, bumped into the rock legend Chris Squire (bass player with "Yes") on a street corner in Monterey.
When I was a child, worked at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. I stopped by Luciano Pavarotti's dressing room and asked for his autograph. Did not have a pen! He had a sharpie nearby and signed my program.
To my surprise, he was smoking a cigarette.
I've met Tara, Lafayette, and Alcide from HBO's True Blood! They were all super nice!
I Was invited into the cockpit of the A380 last night on my trip to Joburg and shook hands with the captain and the two senior first officers. The also showed me the sleeping room where they can rest during the flight. Could not avoid the question if they all three sleep in business class while autopilot is on? Answer was no, we are not Air ....... you know who. For me this was much more exiting then spotting a celeb. Guess I would not recognize them anyway except Uma Thurman and Brad Pitt (not at the same time and occasion) which I spotted resp. met a few years ago in NYC area.
But the probability of meeting celebs (we call them Promis) in South Beach is mountains higher then in Hamburg anyway......
I've met Andy Serkis aka Gollum from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies at an LA convention. Saw Mike Ditka (Chicago Bears coach) in Vegas once.
I saw Mike Ditka at Miami airport! Our first double hit!
Daaaa Bears!!! Great Saturday Night Live skit on Mike Ditka.
I sat next to the comedian Sinbad on a flight from San Jose to Denver a few years ago!
Is he really a celebrity??
Yes he was at the time!
Some country music stars.. Ronny Dunn, Trace Adkins, Johnny Cash and June Carter (of course that was a while ago ), Colin Powell (chatted with him), Kenny Loggins (chatted with him - weirdo), Glen Campbell on a Southwest flight on his way to Phoenix to face drunk driving charges. I'm sure there were others famous and infamous!
Joanne, fantastic stories. I would have enjoyed being a 'bird' listening into the conversation with Colin Powell. Wonderful. Thanks for sharing. Lauren
Alan Alda on the elevator at the Toys R Us in Times Square. Taller than I expected. Said "I have always admired your work." He smiled and said "Thank you."
Walked by Michael Jordan sitting in First Class circa 1989?
Richard Schiff (West Wing) with his son in a bodega in midtown Manhattan. Said the same thing as above. He said thanks. Actually took a moment to chat. Nice guy.
Saw Jane Fonda (circa 1976) in the foyer of my Aunt and Uncle's house in LA. Was to young and stupid to really appreciate this...
Sat next to Richard Dreyfus on a flight LGA to ALB in a Beech 1900D (19 seats, on row each side). On his way to Williamstown, MA for the theater festival.
My last encounter was in 2011 when I met someone I'd admired in the music industry for a long time: Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. I had somewhat of an "in" to meet him during the only time I know of he's ever performed in Denver, and arranged backstage passes before the concert.
I don't get starstruck usually, but despite my large catalog of knowledge about his career and questions I would have liked to have asked him, I had my daughter with me, and the only thing I could muster to ask was on her behalf: "So, have you ever met Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus?"
Being in radio and covering local sports games from about 1991-2000, I've met tons of celebs - but no one else recently.
Chris, thanks for sharing this lovely image and story. I especially appreciate you encouraging us to share our tweet luv stories. Super. Regards, Lauren
A few years ago I was in NYC eating dinner by myself in a Deli about 10 PM, when Jeff Bridges and his wife walked in! I'm a huge fan. I almost choked on my sandwich. He sat at the table right next to me. I was trying to be cool so I started texting my son, Travis in California. Travis told me to call him "the Dude" and buy him a White Russian. He was just a regular guy, out with his wife, talking about their kids and how good his burger tasted. I was star struck and he was nice enough to pose for this shot. I listen to his sound track from the movie Crazy Heart in my car all the time.
"The Dude abides"
Donna, what a fun story. I especially appreciate your willingness to share this photos with us. Terrific. Regards, Lauren
Glad to learn she was not dressed like the picture you posted Nick *lol* Awesome post! I had fun reading everybody's experiences. I once bumped into Guy Kawasaki and that was awesome!
When we were in Los Gatos, I came across Robert Paxton (male star of the Twilight movies). Didn;t have time to say hello because he was with a group of friends walking down the street. He didn't look like a vampire to me!
My Aunt is Robin Mattson, a fairly well known soap opera star, currently on General Hospital, if anyone wants an autographed picture, etc.
Wow, I love this post! Nicholas Howe, I would have freaked out. Brienne of Tarth is the definition of a strong woman. Have you read the Game of Thrones books??
Read all the books. Watched the HBO series. Very impressed.
We were at the Opera last night (Glyndebourne - quite famous over here for Opera) and I spotted the actor Tom Ward - he will be known to brits as Harry Cunningham from BBC's "Silent Witness" - he was also in a Dr Who episode a while back.
My wife though was disappointed - she said that he was a lot shorter than he seemed on television!
We also spotted Robert Winston there as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Winston
I was on a flight to Boston from San Francisco and got upgraded to 1st class on a 767. A chap sat next to me and I didn't think anything of it. I started watching the movie Daredevil, with Ben Affleck, and the guy next to me said that guy in the movie sucks. About an hour after I got off the plan I realized the person sitting next to me was Ben and he was being very self deprecating. Also shorter and thinner than I expected.
I also taught Aikido to one Charlie Neville who is Aron Neville's brother for a couple of months, and he had the Neville Brothers signed a CD jacket for my mom who was and is a huge fan.
Noooooooooooooooooo.... Ben cannot be short!!
Joanne, many of the stars are! 20 Short Hollywood Celebrities - Business Insider
I met Aaron Neville just outside the Empress Hotel in British Columbia as we were entering for high tea! I told him I loved his music and he asked me which CD was my favorite. I only had one so I mentioned that one and he started recommending others I should buy!
Michael, I cannot believe you sat next to Ben Affleck on a plane and didn't realize who it was.
There was definitely a hand hitting head moment.
I graduated with Kathy Nail from high school.
Oh, you don't recognize that name. Do you recognize the name Kate Capshaw?
For our 25th class reunion held at a Teamster's hall on a very hot and humid August evening in St. Louis County, Missouri, many of us were wondering if she was going to show up and bring her husband. Instead, she sent a fax to one of her friends, apoligizing for not being there. She should had left it there.
Instead, she added that she and Spielberg couldn't come because they were vactioning on some Greek island.
I met Tom Baker once. I can confirm that he really does give out jellybabies.
And I met Norton Juster once (if you haven't read his book The Phantom Tollbooth, you should rectify that immediately).
And ten years ago I met John and John from TMBG, at a show they were doing in a bookshop nearby.
I think it depends on perhaps the definition of celebrity. I have worked for Secretary of State James Baker and countless politicians and leaders over the years, so I have met many members of the US legislature. Last week met several soccer players on the Americas Aguila team in Mexico. Cameras were flashing everywhere, it was crazy. Those poor guys have serious fans. Nowadays, I tend to get excited to meet authors, academics, thought leaders, musicians and athletes. I have had the honor of meeting Isabel Allende and Carlos Fuentes in person to name a few that have stuck in my mind for me personally.
I take your point: context is vitally important. A few years back, a friend of mine was at a political conference in Canada when she happened to meet China Miéville. My friend was doing the whole star-struck fan thing, but it turned out that she was the only one there who seemed to know him as a writer (he was there in order to give a speech on Marxism).
I've had a few encounters....
- My wife and I met Drew Carey and Ryan Stiles in Las Vegas on her birthday, and they sang happy birthday to her.
- We also saw Cedric the Entertainer with his family at Canada's Wonderland theme park in Toronto, Ontario - Canada.
- My wife met Donald Trump in NYC and shook his hand, then his body guard quickly had some hand sanitizer ready to keep the germs of us common people at bay.
- I met Linus Torvalds at Usenix in San Diego in 1998. He was pretty fun we hung out with a few geeks including myself by the pool drinking. He had a couple of Blue Hawaiians.
This morning....Me and Mr T in Chicago airport.
That's very cool. On my way to VMworld last week, I got to meet someone I've respected for over four (4) decades. Dr. Bill Cosby himself!!! Unfortunately, the person taking the photo wasn't steady handed, but you can still tell who it is.
Cary Wagner, thanks for sharing your celebrity spotting on your way to #VMWorld last week.
Nicholas Howe, dare I say, "I pity the fool" . Fun, thanks for sharing.
