This is an active solutions area for HDS and Hitachi Ltd and many of our products are being positioned as cloud enablers.
Practice? Or Practice Area?
Don't we look at Healthcare, Oil and Gas, Media and Entertainment as verticals? Here I go exposing my lack of knowledge.
Does cloud fit into that same description?
Is cloud computing really a vertical? That is a horizontal solution that can be adopted across multiple vertical industry. We are considering specific use cases for the use of cloud computing specific in the verticals such as HLS, CME, and O&G.
What you described are market verticals...and that's a way to go. It wasn't clear from the response to the "Security" post what was actually meant by verticals in the context of The Community.
I would offer, however, that there should probably be a very visible place for things that HDS and Hitachi see as strategic activities. Examples might include cloud, big data, etc. This stuff is more like technology verticals. These are the areas where you're likely to get HDS senior management and executives to participate. Speaking of HDS senior management and executives, they seem to be missing in action; will they be wading into The Community?
Being that I am currently involved in three different cloud activities right now, HDS seems to be playing in the IaaS and SaaS areas of cloud, while at the same time chasing existing Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) for general hardware/software sales. I would say this is definitely a technology vertical and deserves an area on the Community. The other thing that I would like to see is a private and public area for the cloud vertical space since the various teams are likely going to need a space outside of the Loop.
Maybe sector is a better way of describing this rather than vertical?
Seems like a reasonable characterization. I guess you could put "security & privacy" under the same designation. With that said, how do will deal with these sectors here?
IDC and Gartner call them different technology "market". They also usually publish a standard list of taxonomy (at least IDC does) which provide a definition and describe the "market"
I do agree that we should have section in the community to cover those topics.
I do think that Eric is on to something. Potentially if business for public and hybrid-cloud providers take off significantly they could look a lot like Telco. CloudPro perhaps?
Large providers would certainly look like an OTT. Some already do.
