Are Social Security Cards outdated ?

In the wake of the recent security breaches at Target and Neiman Marcus there have been numerous efforts to bring to light the outdated US credit card authentication systems.

I think it is much bigger than that. In order to defeat the hackers I think instead of SSN numbers being issued at birth the US government needs to issue a cryptographic equivalent of SSN card which could serve as a person's digital identity.


Everything could then be derived from this crypto digital identity i.e Credit Cards, Drivers Licenses, Passwords, Website authentication etc

If a two factor authentication is built into this crypto digital identity then even if the crypto SSN is stolen or hijacked it will be pretty useless.


There are however many people who will see this as a Orwellian move towards governmental control of online identity.

But I think there is a need for an government issued online identity worldwide.
