Hello, question for the community. Is anyone using file tiering software with their storage? Not necessarily from HDS but any vendors software?
Sorry no one has responded to your question since it was posted. Can you clarify what you mean by file tiering? HDS storage offers Dynamic Tiering. This feature migrates data at the "data page" level. In this implementation, data is recorded in 42mb data page units. It is at the data page level that access frequency is monitored. The Hitachi Dynamic Tiering logic can be configured to automatically migrate frequently accessed data pages to higher performance storage and infrequently accessed data pages to lower performance storage. I have configured Hitachi Dynamic Tiering and watched it do its magic. It is pretty cool! Hitachi enterprise class storage systems VSP and VSP G1000 offer this feature. The new VSP Midrange storage family offerings VSP G200, VSP G400, VSP G600 and VSP G800 also now offer this feature. I hope this information is helpful.
Hi Janet, no worries. It was mainly a question to the storage admins out there asking them if they are using any kind of file tiering software. Not necessarily HDS but any vendors.
NTP is one company that comes to mind that has a product that does this. The downside is that it adds an additional layer to the file management.
I think this is the point of HDT, that there is no additional layer to the file management. Also if you have a 50GB file then suppose only 50 MB is hot? You'll waste an amount of capacity trying to fix the entire file in a particular tier.
When I worked with SSD (too) many years ago, hot file analysis was part of trying to minimize the capacity of SSD to purchase but often the big files spoilt the calculations.
