We have a VMWare Infra using VSP Storage and with ESX clusters sharing luns via hostgroups .As a part of standardization , I need to rename host groups and hosts in VSP , keeping the luns unchanged. Would it be Okay to to that ? Please confirm
use SN to edit host and hostgroups
It can be tricky based on how you are managing your infrastructure.
If you are using storage navigator to do all provisioning (not recommended) then you can basically edit the names.
But usually we use the host names as the hostgroup names so that it becomes for admins coming later in the
time to know where luns are mapped.
If you are changing the hostname of the esx servers so that you can match the hostgroupnames with those host names then do the following
- change the name in esx
- in HCS remove and readd the hosts
- change the names in SN so that the host group match the host names
- refresh the storage from HCS.
but if change in SN and do refresh HCS should show the Hostgroup and host names isn't it?
If I do not need to change the ESX host name , and just need to change the host names and host groups to follow some standard naming convention , I could just rename the hostgroups and hostnames directly in SN, It would not cause any problems I believe , right ?
