Hitachi HCI Gets a Performance Booster with Intel Ice Lake and Optane NVMe SSD

Since introducing the first all-NVMe Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) powered by Intel® Optane™ SSD P4800X in prior years (see the previous
blog
)
, we have seen steady adoption of our high-performance, compact HCI appliances. IT consolidation, business-critical app deployment, and tech refreshes have been the driving force behind the slow but steady transition from all-flash to all-NVMe HCI systems.
New upgrades to
Hitachi HCI
include Intel’s 3
rd
generation scalable processors (aka Ice Lake), Optane persistent memory, and RDMA technology to harness the potential of high-speed data processing capabilities introduces with Optane gen2 drives.
Lab tests revealed significant improvements in IOPS and latency to enable technology teams to run more workloads while reducing the number of nodes needed.
Hitachi UCP HC
, with Intel® Optane™ SSD DC NVMe P5800X with NVMe drives in the caching tier and the Intel® SSD DC P4510 with NVMe in the capacity tier, delivers significant performance enhancements up to
2.5X
improvement in IOPS and up to
4X
improvement in storage latencies.
HCI clusters were tested on VMware’s HCIBench to replicate actual use case scenarios and observed superb performance enhancements over previous generation all-NVMe systems.
We are now excited to announce that new Hitachi
converged
and hyperconverged nodes, enabled with the latest Intel processors, persistent memory and Optane NVMe SSDs are globally available to order. We will continue to support Intel Cascade Lake processors on our HCI and CI solutions.
In addition to this, we recently introduced adaptable HCI nodes with vSAN HCI Mesh for our customers to improve asset utilization and save on license costs by simply tapping into unused vSAN capacity from another vSAN cluster. The new architecture allows overutilized UCP clusters to remotely access vSAN datastores from underutilized UCP HC clusters hosted under the same vCenter. This provides lower or alternative tier option to our customers when considering how to meet their capacity growth needs where they might not need the benefits of integrated automated external SAN arrays that customers are using today with our HCI solutions.
