Adding to the Confusion at HPE- Yet Another Storage Platform

By Hubert Yoshida posted 06-20-2019 00:00

On Tuesday, June18, HPE announced a new high end storage platform called Primera. HPE’s current storage product lines – Nimble and 3PAR - are mostly positioned as midrange to the low -end of the High-end. Primera adds yet another product line into the mix and is positioned in the high-end. Similar to Dell, they have multiple product lines, with questionable futures. However, whereas Dell is trying to rationalize their multiple product lines, HPE seems to be going in the opposite direction and adding to the confusion.

 nimble-3par

Primera is a mix of various acquired technologies from 3PAR and Nimble. Some analysts speculate that Primera will replace 3PAR, which raises the question of, what is the transition plan for 3PAR? A post by Nick Triantos, HPE Global Field CTO, states that Primera is not a 3PAR HW refresh, and is a redesigned OS which does not exist in 3PAR systems. Nick defines a Tier 0 with special attributes that are associated with Mission Critical applications and positions Primera as a Tier 0 device.

Primera is not available today, but HPE claims that it will be orderable in August. There is a lack of real specs, to support their high-end positioning. HPE does mention their support of AI driven intelligence which comes from Infosight, a product that was acquired with Nimble storage. This could be similar to Hitachi’s Hitachi Infrastructure Analytics Advisor (HIAA) which we announced early last year. They also followed Hitachi’s lead in offering a 100% availability guarantee which differentiates Primera from Nimble and 3PAR storage systems.

Hitachi has one VSP storage platform that scales from low midrange to the largest high end system with one Storage Virtualization Operating System RF. This ensures that all platforms have the same enterprise capabilities and guarantees (except for mainframe support that is available only in the F/G 1000 and 1500 models). All models meet Nick’s definition of Tier 0. The only real difference in the low to high-end models is the packaging for scalability.

Hitachi Vantara is the only storage vendor with the R&D capability to develop their own integrated software and hardware stack to deliver one platform that can scale to meet different storage requirements from low - midrange to high – end, and adapt to new trends in storage requirements, like support for containers.
