Gartner 2020 Magic Quadrant For Primary Storage and Critical Capabilities

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, the annual Gartner Magic Quadrant for Primary Storage Arrays and the companion Gartner Critical Capabilities for Solid State Arrays and Gartner Critical Capabilities for Hybrid Storage Arrays were published this month. These reports were very favorable to Hitachi Vantara’s VSP storage arrays, particularly the VSP 5000 which has been the fastest ramping product in our history. Dan McConnell, senior vice president of infrastructure at Hitachi Vantara, who announced the VSP 5000 at our Next 2019 Event,  summaries these reports in his blog “Why Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform 5000 is Taking Off Like a Rocket. He also talks about the benefits that one of our customers achieved in real live practice. Courtesy copies of both reports – and the 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Primary Storage – can be obtained from Hitachi Vantara here: https://www.hitachivantara.com/go/2020-gartner-magic-quadrant-for-primary-storage-arrays.html

The VSP 5000 series starts as small as 3.8TB and scales up to 69PB of raw capacity and 21 million IOPS of performance with industry leading 70μs latency. This allows for massive consolidation of workloads for cost savings and data optimization. The patented Hitachi Accelerated Fabric allows Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System RF (SVOS RF) to offload I/O traffic as you scale out your data platform, delivering up to 21 million IOPS. The VSP 5000 enables you to scale up as well as out. It can scale from 2 to 4 to 6 Nodes where each node has dual controllers that provide high performance access and 8 nines of availability. Mixing NVMe and SAS flash together allows you to get the most economic $/GB rates available up to 69PB of capacity. And the platform is backed with a 100% data-availability guarantee. AI and ML is baked into the controller which enables Hitachi to provide a 7:1 efficiency guarantee when data reduction techniques are used.

While the VSP 5000 family has the additional hardware features that enable to it to scale beyond our competitors, it uses the same operating system as the VSP family of midrange arrays, the E590 and E790 which are packaged in 2 U controllers with 24 internal drive slots that can scale to a raw internal capacity of 361TB of flash drives!

The E590 and E790 were recently announced and are not included in the Gartner 2020 reviews. Only, the E990 which is the high end of the E series which is packaged in a 4 U drawer is included in the reviews. Most of the critical capabilities mention in the Gartner reports would also apply to the E590 and E790. They use the same SVOS RF operating system but in a smaller form factor which provides the lowest cost per IOPs in the industry.  They still supports the 100% data availability and 7:1 efficiency guarantee, which is available with the rest of the VSP family of arrays. While these 2U units do not attach additional backend expansion trays, they can attach external storage arrays through its bi-directional FC storage ports and virtualize the external arrays and support a maximum raw external capacity of 144PB. The VSP E590 and E790 enable best-in-class performance and new levels of simplicity with integrated data protection and copy data management capabilities to protect and simplify the day-to-day management of your data. AI-powered Advanced Data Reduction (ADR) in the Hitachi VSP E Series portfolio drives capacity efficiencies so midrange customers can make the most of limited space.
If you have midrange requirements you should review the E590 and E790. They have the capabilities and guarantees of those cited in the Gartner reports.
