New Report Shows How Key Strategies Overcome Cloud Migration Challenges

The cloud isn’t just a hot topic — it has become essential to an agile, secure and futuristic organization. A recent ESG survey found that more than half of organizations now use or plan to use public cloud infrastructure.

As public cloud adoption continues to grow year over year, increasing numbers of organizations moving along the digital transformation path are looking to the cloud to improve operational and business efficiencies, enhance security, provide greater agility and flexibility. Additionally, they want to decrease the time, expense, and resources spent on routine maintenance and updates in a traditional, three-tier infrastructure—allowing valuable resources more time to focus on value-added activities.

In fact, recent ESG research shows a significant increase in public cloud infrastructure adoption over the last 24 months, with more than half (58%) of IT professionals indicating that their organizations are currently using or have plans to use public cloud infrastructure. Compared to this, two years ago, only 42% of organizations said they were using or had planned to use a public cloud infrastructure.

Yet cloud adoption can be a difficult move. The research identified building a business case and preparing applications as top among the challenges that impede broader and faster cloud adoption within an organization. Other challenges identified include redesigning and moving those applications to the cloud, training and adoption for new tools and processes, and application discovery and migration planning.

The IT professionals participating in the survey indicated that aligning cloud objectives with key business strategies is critical to overcoming these challenges. For example, leveraging IT resources to speed product innovation and time to market was a top cloud and business objective cited by respondents. Companies have a huge need to innovate by developing cloud-native apps, faster and more efficiently than the competition. To add the speed of app development and releasing new versions for operations on a daily or weekly basis was unknown before for traditional client-server or web-based applications. Agile and scalable DevOps environments for cloud-native apps – where IT innovation can grow and thrive – is a real challenge for many IT organizations, resulting in a ‘shadow-IT’ approach often utilizing DevOps tools hosted in a public cloud infrastructure.

Every organization is at a different point in its cloud journey, but most IT experts agree that a multicloud approach is the best way to configure an IT infrastructure to maintain performance, data integrity and manage costs in both regional and global deployments. But a multicloud approach also can make visibility and control over applications and other cloud resources a challenging proposition. Data locked in a public cloud and vendor lock-in to proprietary cloud technologies can also be hard to manage. Add to this the ever-important compliance and regulatory landscape and there are other complex issues that may arise when running an application in production in a public cloud.

Therefore, the question remains: How can organizations accelerate their cloud migration and application modernization with confidence?

Hitachi Vantara cloud services offer public cloud migration, application modernization, operations  services and advisory expertise, allowing organizations to drive digital transformation across both hybrid and multicloud infrastructures. Hitachi Vantara services are cloud-agnostic, which means data, applications, and workloads are always run where it makes the most sense—and are easy to change. This future-proof and cost-effective approach allows applications (and the data they generate and consume) to easily migrate across cloud platforms without expending additional resources.

Businesses want the ability to accelerate cloud adoption with confidence so they can take advantage of innovation, cloud services, and the potential of an improved economic operating model. Cloud computing advances IT transformation, and with advanced tools and automation, it can enable companies to further enhance on their work to streamline and embed DevOps processes for greater efficiencies that are truly transformative.
To accomplish these goals, the right cloud advisor can assist organizations to find viable ways to avoid the pains of lift and shiftwhich can consume an enormous amount of time and valuable resources, and codify and automate new processes that streamline the process and make it distinctly repeatable, thereby reducing time to market.
