  • 1.  Generally, how are you backing up your HNAS these days?

    Posted 06-27-2023 11:20

Interested to post to the community and ask how people are protecting their HNAS data these days, surely I'm the only one still using NDMP?!

Our backup infrastructure is based on Netbackup and we are looking at D-NAS (dynamic NAS) backup, has anyone used it?  If so what has been your experience with this so far?

If you're aren't using Netbackup I'd still like to hear what platforms you are using and what your experience has been - positive/negative etc - please share.

    Thanks

    Hi Dave

Dude, Your still using NDMP,  that is so un-cool ; NDMP is what I used 12 years ago.

Today I use the latest AI-Blockchain based CDP NAS backups paid for by a chatGPT coded iphone based sustainable deep-sea crypto mining operation.

Just kidding ... I still use NDMP direct to tape. ( you are not the only one ! )

I'm currently using a system based on EMC Networker.   Networker manages library, tape-devices, media and provides core NDMP functionality.

I wrote my own job-dispatch and scheduling routines in python.   The system works well; but , is not modern.  I wish there were other NAS point-in-time backup/restore options.

Main problems with NDMP direct-to-tape. The number of parallel streams is limited by the number of tape drives. I currently use 7 LTO-8 drives.

( I'm considering writing incremental backups to disk; but, this requires an array purchase , and also requires backup data to flow over the LAN)

I my mind I'm thinking that, the HNAS should have some sort of built-in continuous-data-protection scheme ??

We need to have some sort of community event where the future of NAS backups / DR can be discussed in an open / creative manner.

We certainly hear and understand the need for non-NDMP based backup using snapshots. Many of our acct teams are aware of this need, for obvious reasons and the topic is making its way up the roadmap of priorities - but it is a heavy lift.

D-NAS has been used but does not function in the manner that is desired (by using incremental snapshots).

Thanks.  Is there anything along these lines on the roadmap yet?

Hello Dave, roadmap information cannot be conveyed in this forum, but as I mentioned the topic is widely known within the HNAS engineering circles, HNAS Product Management and also the Hitachi Technical Expert realms. This is a constant topic of conversation and I'd suggest staying in touch with your acct team who can reach out to the Geo specific technical expert for updates.

We use Veeam to backup HNAS which can do incremental backups using SMB and/or NFS.
