    Hi All,

    We wanted to upgrade Tomcat as we got some vulnerabilities reported.

    We are on 9.3 community edition and looking to upgrade only tomcat from 9.5 community version.

    Where can we find the community downloadable and are there any worked steps for tomcat upgrade?

    Hi Divya,

    IMHO official release of CE not available now. But you can download actual latest build v9.5.0.0-240 here.

    And replace bin, lib, conf, server in tomcat directory.

    I am not sure on the official stance from Hitachi on what a "release" means, but these are some references that I follow.

    On their support page, 9.5 was released in May (https://support.pentaho.com/hc/en-us/articles/205789159-Pentaho-Product-Version-End-of-Life-Policy)

    I noticed a couple weeks ago that the 9.5 documentation was now available (https://help.hitachivantara.com/Documentation/Pentaho/Data_Integration_and_Analytics/9.5/What's_new_in_Pentaho_9.5)

    However, 9.4 is still the latest on the marketing download page (https://www.hitachivantara.com/en-us/products/pentaho-platform/data-integration-analytics/pentaho-community-edition.html)

    Finaly, fwiw, 10.0 is available on their repo linked by @Petr Prochazka's comment (https://repo.orl.eng.hitachivantara.com/ui/native/pntpub-mvn-release-orl-cache/pentaho/pentaho-server-ce/). I have downloaded and run a few tests from Spoon, but have not run any of our full scale transformations on the new version.

    I do see that 9.5 and 10.0 bring new versions of Spring Framework. 

    Given the questions around vulnerability alerts in older versions of Spring, what is your recommendation for managing those alerts with CE 9.4? Although there are Enterprise only features, can CE users go to the newer CE version so we pick up the new Spring version? Or, do we need to stay on 9.4 and upgrade Spring on our own?

    Hello Mike,

    The Pentaho 9.4 CE is an excellent platform for community use. It was released in 2022, roughly 12 months ago. 

    Pentaho 9.4 is a non-LTS version and does not benefit from the Pentaho Service Pack releases and component upgrades. 

    Upgrading Spring to a following minor version on your own might work, though the dependency tree might be more complex. 

    For latest and most secure Pentaho, please contact our experts and present them with your use case and needs. I am sure they will be able to find a solution for you.

    I contacted the Pentaho support and they told me that there is no plan to produce a 9.5 CE binary download.

    It is a real pity, because 9.4 is there but lacks the fixes to the latest vulnérabilises. And we do not know how to get a safe 9.5 CE download.

    BTW: Does it mean that HV will not add CE downloads in the CE area any longer?

    We have several 9.5 EE already, but for some simpler use cases CE is what we use.
    We need 9.5 CE, not for the new EE functionalities, but for the patches to the latest vulnerabilities.

    As Enterprise client, having access to Pentaho EE, I suggest you contact your HV account manager / HV representative and expose the use-case and needs. Our HV representative will help you address them in efficient manner.

    Mike - thanks for these details. I've been searching thru the directories of https://repo.orl.eng.hitachivantara.com/ui/native/pntpub-mvn-release-orl-cache to see if there's the PDI CE client development tool/client for those latest versions... but I'm not able to find it.

    Being new to Pentaho... would it be packaged with the server download?

    It appears the link in Petr's post is no longer active.  May have been an accidental early release, possibly buggy if not official.

    I misakenly assumed that CE versions were released on the same schedule as EE, just with reduced functionality & DIY support.  Given the vulnerabilities mentioned, is there a nominated timeframe for CE releases behind their EE equivalents?  

    Are update patches provided for CE versions of Pentaho Server or is it necessary to install the updated version in its entirety, customise, and then import the repository from the previous version?  

    Maybe Mladen can assist...

    The link to our build site was temporarily exposed and available.  This inadvertent mistake was fixed, as you surmised.

    We are currently undergoing a cloud deployment transition and are moving forward under new licensing models for 9.5 and 10.0.  While 9.3 EE is an LTS release, it is continuing to be patched, the other releases are not and are quickly falling out of support during this time. CE releases were never patched like EE and only benefited from these enhancements at the next point (usually annual) release.   Due to the above transition plans and licensing moves, CE has not been re-released since 9.4. 

    We are moving forward rapidly with 10.1 and 10.2 in the works for '24.  At this time, we do expect a parallel release akin to CE for 10.2.  At this time, I do not have any other new news to report.

    I have been a dedicated user of CE for quite some time now, and appreciate the efforts the community and HV have put into making it the robust, multi functional suite it has become.   CE is a valuable solution for users like us whose requirements can't justify a subscription based tool.

    While I understand the need for HV to evolve and explore new licensing models, the recent divergence in the release cycles between CE and EE, coupled with the closure of the old forums, has raised concerns among the CE user base. The community has been a vital part of Pentaho's growth, offering valuable insights to developers and serving as a conduit for new EE clients.

    I believe transparency is crucial in maintaining the trust of the existing user base. If there are plans to phase out CE or transition to a limited EE license with reduced functionality compared to current CE versions, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share those details with us. Alternatively, if Pentaho remains committed to CE, please provide reassurance so that we can alleviate any apprehensions about the product's future.

    Many of us are invested in Pentaho and want to continue contributing to, and benefiting from its success. Clear communication about the future roadmap will go a long way in ensuring the community remains engaged and confident in the platform.

    I did want to take the opportunity to explain the old forums.  It was a definitely a point of multiple discussions internally.  The software that was used had fallen out of support.  We were able to transition the old forums to read only mode, while the new one was created.  Unfortunately, a security vulnerability was raised in the old software and no upgrade path was given.  It had to be taken down and the old threads were lost.  We clearly understand that this was not a good look.

    We are in a similar situation as Charles has described and heartily agree with his sentiment.

    The Ctools suite in CE have been particularly useful to us. Although it's been awhile since there have been any updates, none since the Webdetails acquisition, it still is a very robust and flexible tool for building dashboards specific to any user requirement. I've been actively looking for a possible replacement, because of CTools aging toolset. So far I have not found anything that matches the flexibility and features of Ctools and Pentaho.

    It would be awesome if I didn't need to replace this but the road ahead looks pretty uncertain.

    Also curious to know if the dashboard building tools in EE are as flexible as CTools. The ability to build your own dashboard component and the template component in CDE has been particularly useful.
