Can Multiple Users update the PME Data Model at the same time, using the latest version of PME.
We have 8.3 and it cannot cater for two users but we are moving to 9.2 Enterprise Edition and it sounds like this version cannot cater for two users.
Does the latest version work for Multiple Users Please? What is the version to ask for?

    Hi Vince,

As far as my experience goes, I've never tried to do this, but I'm not sure how it would work. It seems to me that any change made by one user would be overwritten by the other user at the point of saving. Come to think of it, we've never even tried to have 2 instances of the Metadata Editor running against the same Pentaho environment (which you'd need to do to, I assume).

Unfortunately, the exported XMI file structure is not conducive to merging either. Short of coming up with a notation that would allow editing in a simultaneous way (like the way Google Docs works) that you could then convert programmatically into the XMI notation, I don't know how you'd achieve simultaneous changes by different developers. (I find the XMI format to be a very unfortunate choice as far as the exported format is concerned. I've even toyed with the idea of coming up with a way to parse it into an XML format more similar to what the Analyzer engine uses, but, of course, there's never time for something like that.)

Another alternative would be to have multiple models so that the different cubes each had their own file and the reports would be associated with the appropriate model. But you'd still potentially have multiple developers needing to modify a given file--so that might not be of any use either; and you'd end up with multiple definitions for the same dimension tables.

Sorry not to be able to offer anything useful, but no, I don't think it will work regardless of 9.2 Enterprise vs. 8.3 Community.

    Craig,

Thank you for the response. I did not think that two people could work on the Model in PME, together but just wanted to make sure about the next release of Pentaho.

    Regards Vince
