FAST AND RELIABLE ACCESS TO DATA OPENS THE DOOR TO INNOVATION AND GROWTH –NGS’S STORY

Data lies at the heart of every organization today: from information to finances, employees, assets, customers and more. And this is precisely why National Government Services (NGS) chose to modernize its slow, legacy disks, replacing them with the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform.

For more than 50 years NGS has played a vital role in ensuring society’s most vulnerable people can access the healthcare they need. Its processing centers handle more than 200 million Medicare claims every year, making up to $70 billion in payments each year for the approximately 25 million Medicare beneficiaries. To process those claims, it also deals with thousands of healthcare providers.

Clearly, NGS needs fast and reliable anytime access to data to serve its customers.

Hitachi Vantara has partnered with the contractor for more than a decade. Ryan Rady, one of NGS’s infrastructure architects explains: “Hitachi Vantara not only has excellent products that perform well, but is also there with us, day in, day out, if we ever need anything. We know we can rely on Hitachi Vantara.”

So, when magnetic tapes and spinning disks were slowing NGS down, we helped the contractor out in a flash – literally. We recommended switching to our flash module (FMD) technology. Today, the solid-state FMD technology supports a whole host of different types of data, from Oracle and SQL databases to virtual machines.

The FMD technology has lived up to its promise: backup times are down from six and a half hours to around four, synchronization between data centers is down from over four hours to under 40 minutes. NGS saves 30 hours a month on storage administration, which frees up the team to focus on innovation.

And they don’t need to worry about risk adverse clients with rigorous quality and security standards either, as Rady confirms: “Reducing risk is probably the number one thing that we have to accomplish here.” Supported by Hitachi technology and Hitachi Vantara expertise, NGS can now demonstrate strong digital experience whenever it bids for new business from the government.

The future is looking bright too. Even with big data coming to the healthcare industry, with reliable management of its data, NGS is continuing to grow the number of federal agencies that it can support and add new capabilities for existing customers.
