Here a Cloud, There a Cloud, What's the Deal with Multicloud?

If you’ve read any of my other blogs – you know that I love technology and how it can be used to solve real business problems. I’m lucky that I get the opportunity to talk with a wide variety of companies as well as other professionals to keep learning about how our world is continuously changing around us, and how we can better help people prepare for the future.
One of my favorite topics is cloud – in all its myriad forms. I remember a few years ago both analysts and customers asking my opinion on whether one cloud type would end up dominant. My answer then, and now, is that since IMHO the goal of cloud is to put your data and applications where it makes the most sense, when it makes the most sense – that the logical answer is multicloud. What is multicloud? Lots of vendors, analysts and virtually every customer I talk to has a slightly different definition.
My definition for multicloud is any combination of private cloud (for the data that MUST remain within your firewall for whatever reason – and they are legion) and potentially multiple simultaneous public cloud deployments. Why? To take advantage of the different benefits of the different public clouds available, when you need them for that advantage. And add in the ability to easily move between the various public clouds and private cloud as need be.
In many cases, this is still a goal. Once you implement one cloud’s data services, it can be hard to move to another cloud – but not impossible by any stretch of the imagination. And it’s getting easier every day. Part of the challenge is that the people who make policy decisions (remember “cloud first” – whether it made sense or not?) don’t necessarily understand all of the ramifications.
Not that your management is like the Pointy Haired Boss – but having people that understand all of the ramifications, and how to work through them, is critical. Which is one of the reasons that more and more enterprises are turning to Hitachi to find out how
Hitachi Enterprise Cloud
(HEC) can help them achieve their business goals – guaranteed. Fully managed and delivered as a service, HEC is pre-designed and engineered with templated service catalogs to facilitate self-service with full support for both the full gamut VMware cloud solutions as well as cloud native environments.
Today we are expanding and enhancing our HEC offering with even more VMware cloud support, and adding a cloud-native application platform that speeds development, delivery and orchestration of modern apps, containers, DevOps tools and data services at scale. We have also added and advanced Kubernetes platform for automated, enterprise-grade Kubernetes-based container service (imagine a 1-3 click full Kubernetes setup!). A Data Services Hub is now available to enable customers to securely exchange, process and analyze data from multiple simultaneous data streams in real time. And finally, we have added integration with the Hitachi Cloud Accelerator Platform to provide automation to accelerate the application migration and journey to cloud.
So what’s the bottom line? There’s no getting the genie back into the bottle – and why would we want to? Multicloud is here to stay, and our ability to manage it and reap the business benefits from it (agility, flexibility, security, etc.) will only improve. With today’s announcement around Hitachi Enterprise Cloud, our goal is to help you achieve the true goal of multicloud – putting your data where you need it, when you need it, for as long as you need it. And we at Hitachi are here to hep you become the Multicloud hero you were born to be!
