As you may have seen, our team shared some updates on our hybrid cloud journey. As part of our mission to leverage the best of cloud ecosystems, we have been exploring Google Cloud Platform's Anthos, which is Google's cloud-centric container platform for running modern apps anywhere consistently at scale.

Now, Hitachi Vantara’s United Compute Platform (UCP) offers on-prem deployment options of Anthos on premises (a component of Google Distributed Cloud Virtual, aka GDC Virtual), which can provide greater performance potential for modernized applications while maintaining support for orchestration tools like Kubernetes and Service Mesh in hybrid multi-cloud scenarios.

UCP provides a converged and hyper-converged infrastructure solution that combines high-performance compute, storage, and networking components into a single, integrated system. UCP's modular architecture allows you to easily scale your infrastructure as your needs grow. It supports a variety of compute and storage configurations, including all-flash and hybrid storage options, and is designed to work with a range of modern applications and workloads, from virtual desktop infrastructure to data intensive processing, storage, and analytics. Explore our Reference Architecture, jointly reviewed between Google and Hitachi, to discover more about our offerings and how they can benefit your organization.

Additionally, UCP includes a range of management and automation tools to help IT teams streamline their operations and reduce the time and effort required to manage your infrastructure. Hitachi's Unified Compute Platform Advisor provides a single pane of glass for managing the entire UCP system, making it easy to keep your infrastructure running smoothly.

Modern Use Cases

While there are plenty of use cases for running Anthos on UCP in edge or on-premises environments, here are the top five, along with example scenarios and procedures:

  1. Application modernization:

Scenario: A large financial institution is struggling with outdated monolithic applications that are difficult to maintain, scale, and update. They want to modernize their applications to be more agile and cost-effective.

Procedure: The institution can use Anthos on Hitachi UCP to containerize their existing applications on-premises and deploy them on Anthos on-premises or in the cloud. By leveraging the power of the Anthos and UCP combination as integrated infrastructure, they can transform their monolithic applications into microservices, allowing them to scale and manage their applications more effectively while reducing costs and improving overall efficiency.

  1. Hybrid cloud deployment:

Scenario: A healthcare organization wants to leverage the benefits of public cloud services while keeping sensitive patient data on-premises to comply with data privacy regulations.

Procedure: Using Anthos on Hitachi UCP, the organization can deploy a hybrid cloud architecture that allows them to run applications and store sensitive data in UCP on-premises while taking advantage of public cloud services like AI and analytics. UCP provides a reliable and high-performance foundation for their on-premises infrastructure, ensuring regulatory compliance and enabling them to optimize their infrastructure for cost and performance.

  1. Multi-cloud management:

Scenario: A retail company wants to avoid vendor lock-in and optimize their workloads across different cloud providers to achieve better cost efficiency and reliability.

Procedure: With Anthos, the retail company can deploy and manage applications across multiple cloud environments, such as Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, and modern on-premises cloud, from a single control plane on Google Cloud. UCP provides a solid foundation for their on-premises infrastructure, enabling them to optimize workloads based on cost, performance, and regional availability while maintaining a consistent management experience.

  1. Edge computing:

Scenario: A manufacturing company wants to deploy IoT devices across its factories to monitor equipment health and improve overall efficiency. They need to process the data from these devices in real-time and as close to the source as possible.

Procedure: The company can use Anthos on Hitachi UCP to deploy and manage Kubernetes-based edge computing applications that process and analyze data from IoT devices in real-time. The high-performance nature of UCP allows for reduced latency and improved overall efficiency, enabling the company to make data-driven decisions to optimize their operations and reduce downtime.

  1. Centralized policy enforcement:

Scenario: A multinational enterprise wants to enforce consistent security policies, network policies, and access controls across all its global locations and environments, including on-premises, edge, and public cloud deployments.

Procedure: The enterprise can use Anthos, along with Anthos Config Management and Policy Controller, to enforce consistent policies across all environments, including the enterprise's private data center/cloud built on UCP on-premises. UCP's robust and secure infrastructure helps ensure a uniform security posture and reduces the complexity of managing policies in a distributed environment, allowing the organization to maintain control and visibility while minimizing the risk of security breaches.

These five use cases highlight the transformative potential of Anthos on UCP in various industries and scenarios, showcasing its ability to modernize applications, optimize infrastructure, and improve security across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
