How do you configure notification when a workflow fails (one or more tasks abnormally exit for example)? The help for configuring email looks like it should, but we're not getting the notification.

In the help I see this. Am I reading this incorrectly?

Email notifications are sent to users when a task fails, or when a task requires input from a user to continue.

We are using 8.5.3 and email does work for approvals, etc.

This is documented in the Install & Configuration Guide. For v8.5.4 it starts on page 64:

The email definition file is in XML format and is located in the following directory:

Automation-Director-installation-folder\conf

Thanks Bill for the information. So I understand correctly this look like it allows me to modify / customize the email received. The issue I have is no email is received when a task / workflow fails. Should I or am I not reading this correctly?

If the contents of the conf file look correct, I would recommend opening a support case.

Thanks Bill. I did open a ticket and found resolution through support.

Looks like the smtp userid/password are required for workflow failure notifications. This wasn't clear and could be improved.

Couple things that could be done better on this via an enhancement request perhaps?

- The dialog where you configure doesn't make smtp auth a requirement. It all appears to work (sending emails via plugin in a workflow) but for failures it did not.

- Support also noted that my template was "customer built". This was copied from Hitachi template - which also didn't notify of failures because of the smtp auth requirement. Why is SMTP authentication required for this feature? Support recommended adding shared service properties - if so, should these have been there and not have to ad them?.

Long story short - notifications of workflow failures should be core functionality and simple. This was not that simple or clear. Maybe for someone who built the product - but needs to be clear and easy for customers.

Please send any documentation suggestions to mailto:doc.comments@hitachivantara.com<mailto:mailto:doc.comments@hitachivantara.com> – if you have product enhancement suggestions, I can get those to the appropriate resource(s), just describe them in as much detail as possible and I will take It from there.

Thanks!

Bill and Wayne Egli,

No need to send this to doc comments, I'm on it. I'm the lead writer for HAD. I'll work with Dev to get more info, but if it's required to make things work (for whatever reason), I will add it the knowledge article documentation. I will also find out about using shared properties, but that's not really related to the initial setup, which is where this is documented for the most part. I will contact you if I have any questions. I will also contact you to review the updated content.

Thanks for all the info!

Janice
