Hello Experts,

I am looking for clarification regarding the recommended host group and host mode configuration for an Ops Center Probe server running as a Linux VM on VMware ESXi.

Environment:

  • Storage: VSP F5200
  • Ops Center Probe installed on a Red Hat Linux VM
  • VM running on VMware ESXi
  • Communication with storage through Command Device (CMDDEV)
  • Fibre Channel connectivity

I reviewed the Open Systems Host Attachment Guide and found the following statement:

“Use Host Mode 21 only for VMware server hosts accessing VMFS datastores. When a Linux or Windows VM directly recognizes and manages a LUN through RDM, the disk should be assigned the host mode corresponding to the guest operating system.”

Based on this, I would like confirmation on the following:

  1. Is it recommended to create a dedicated host group exclusively for the Command Device used by Ops Center Probe?
  2. If the CMDDEV is presented directly to the Linux VM, should the host group use:
    • Host Mode 00 (Standard/Linux)
    • HMO 2, 22, 25, 68
rather than Host Mode 21 (VMware)?
  3. Are there any additional HMOs or System Option Modes required specifically for Ops Center Probe communication through Command Device on VSP 5000 series?

I would appreciate guidance from anyone who has successfully deployed Ops Center Probe with CMDDEV in a VMware environment.

Thank you.
