For anyone looking for a powerful solution for Oracle databases with a very small footprint, here is the good news.
Hitachi recently released a new Virtual Storage Platform E series storage system, the VSP E790. It’s a small 2U, enterprise-class all-flash NVMe storage solution with a maximum raw capacity of 722TB, massive IOPS, and very low I/O latency for the real world. See
this website for a product overview, features, specifications, and more.
Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) for Oracle database uses this new Hitachi VSP storage system to store critical Oracle data, and two 2U Hitachi Advanced Server DS220s as compute nodes for a two-node Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) 19c solution.
Lower IO latency and Higher IOPS means lower host CPU power is required to deliver the same Oracle database performance. That often means huge Oracle license cost reduction.
The figure below shows the high-level architecture diagram.

The table below lists the ORION test results:
Test Category | Test Case | Test Result |
Throughput (IOPS or GB/s) | RT (ms) |
ORION | 8KB Random Read | 2,103,998 | 0.58 |
8KB Random Write | 405,210 | 0.89 |
1MB Sequential Read | 24.37 | N/A |
1MB Sequential Write | 4.51 | N/A |

We also released a new solution for Oracle databases in a virtualized environment with another VSP E series storage system, the VSP E590. For information about the full reference architecture, see
