Data Reliability Engineering After the first wave of a deluge of big data projects a few years ago, we now have an even bigger pipeline of data modernization projects. With modernization and cloud migration projects, the analytical framework needs to run on accurate and reliable data. Data Reliability Engineering ensures that the data systems are reliable, available, and performant. In this technical document, I discuss the concepts of Data Reliability Engineering (DRE), my thoughts on what are its architecture components, principles, and metrics, and explain Hitachi’s DRE service offering which ensures the data can be trusted and acted upon in ...

Innersourcing and its benefits   We all understand how much opensource has transformed software development practices.   By embracing practices like collaborations, transparency, innovation, accessibility, and imbibing philosophy like if many brains across the world work together quality products emerge at much faster pace.   Innersourcing is a software development approach that leverages the same opensource development principles within a controlled boundary like an organization or a business unit.   In other words, it is a methodology by which a company can enable community development of Code, Documentation, and any project collateral ...

Recently I started reading a book names “Influence by Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Dr. Robert Cialdini. There were six principles discussed in detail, but the one which caught my attention, relating to cloud adoption, is “Social Proof” Dr. Cialdini talks about a term called peer-suasion . Am trying to provide a simple meaning of this along with persuasion. Persuasion - the act of persuading somebody to do something or to believe something. Peer-suasion – acting due to peer pressure. This brings up the below questions: Are organizations adopting cloud due to peer pressure?   Is this impacting their ...

Application of Multilayered Defense-in-Depth Approach to Security using Hitachi’s custom 4C Cloud Security Model. One of the most frequently underestimated areas in the implementation of a cloud platform or applications is the emphasis on security.  The purpose of this white paper is to bring more focus to the importance of cloud security and our approach as prescribed through Hitachi Vantara’s customized 4C Security Model. Before we get into specifics of our own view of the 4Cs model, let’s look at what provides a good approach to architecting cloud security. No matter what level of security one administers in their ecosystem, it has to be understood that ...

We all know the extent of the increase in generation and consumption of data. There is also an increased need to ingest huge volumes of data from varied sources in varied formats, comply to governance norms, and perform fast and accurate analytics on data present on different platforms, leading to a deluge of big data projects in the last five years.   Most new big data projects, be it in cloud or on-prem, start with creating a team, most likely a centralized group including designers, architects, developers, testers and infrastructure and project managers for implementations such as a data lake, data warehouse or a combination of both for reporting ...

While there was a rush (and there is still some) to move to the cloud in the past 4- 5 years, we are seeing a dramatic focus on cost efficiency off late. Initially, every organization thought that moving to cloud is going to save them a lot of money (please note, we are not getting into the other benefits of elasticity and performance) The growth of the clous service providers in the past year was  AWS – 20%, Azure – 31%, GCP – 36%!! There were many drivers for the migration to cloud but the pandemic and the ESG drive helped hasten the process. Many organizations used this to score some points on reducing their carbon footprint (this again, is a ...

Why distributed applications are difficult to build  Microservice architecture is one of the best solutions for realizing distributed application architecture.  However, despite doing microservices for the past eight years, it is still complex to build due to the following reasons:   Service invocation is still different for different platforms.   State management is still not mature and stateless services do not solve enterprise problems.     Service-to-service communication using messaging, which is much more ubiquitous, varies based on the message broker’s adoption.   Observability within the services is still subject to the ...
