Overview The Kubernetes monitoring system helps administrators recognize the issues in a Kubernetes cluster and implement proactive cluster management strategies. It simplifies management of a containerized infrastructure by tracking cluster resource utilization as well as CPU, memory, and storage. In Kubernetes, cluster operators monitor the cluster and send an alarm if the necessary number of pods are not running, if resource usage is close a critical limit, or if there is a failure or configuration error that barricades a pod or node from joining the cluster. There are number of tool available to achieve this. Some of the common tools are Grafana and ...

Data protection is top of mind for every application administrator to guarantee business continuity and zero down time for end users. For many legacy administrators, creating backups comes at a cost, whether offloading to another point of contact to create restore points with unsure turn around, or investing a magnitude of time in installing, deploying, and understanding a new interface to complete data copy operations. With Cisco ICO and Hitachi VSP, administrators now have the ability to take advantage of a single tool to manage, orchestrate, and restore data protection sets across the datacenter ecosystem managed by Cisco Intersight. Along with the ...

Why persistent storage? As customers move to deliver new revenue-generating services to their end customers, we see IT development teams move aggressively to cloud-native techniques, including containers as the form factor to provide these application services. These containerized application services are hosted on Kubernetes clusters, that run across edge sites and private, hybrid, and service provider clouds.   As with any application service, data eventually needs to be persisted and stored reliably. This could be a customer’s grocery order placed from a mobile app or a data stream from a drone service that AI/ML models are analyzing. The data location ...

As one of the first enterprise storage vendors to integrate with Cisco Intersight, Hitachi has enabled a magnitude of storage management capabilities that will now be able to be done via Cisco Intersight with the goal of saving end administrators time and frustration. Within Cisco Intersight management platform, admins can utilize the concept of tasks and workflows to easily manage their hybrid IT environments.  Tasks are essentially a library of functions which leverage API invoke calls that can be custom or provided by Cisco out of the box.  These tasks can be compiled to create workflows to enable quick and easy automation of infrastructure without being ...

Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) customers benefit from the flexibility of buy-as-you-grow economics provided by the scale-out architecture. Savings from the upfront investments in external storage infrastructure in exchange can be better utilized in other projects. However, certain scenarios require the independent scaling of compute and storage resources to better align with refresh cycles and resource consumption attributes of workloads. This independent scaling can be achieved using two different methods, depending on the use case, which we will discuss here today. As you will learn, Hitachi Vantara’s HCI platform (aka Unified Compute Platform ...

Building Your Future on a Name authored by Marcus Maddox How would you feel about bringing in a pod? Or adding a block? Or perhaps opting for a stack? All credit to those imaginative people in marketing, but when you’re looking at data management to fit these unpredictable times, we think it pays to be more literal with your labels. --------------- What would you stake your future on? A pod ? The dictionary defines a pod as a compartment or part of a fruit. It has beauty, it has aesthetics, it even has aroma. But is it strong? Is it supportive? A block ? Better perhaps? A solid structural element. ...

When you buy a new house, you have a choice to make. We either buy a pre-built ready to a move-in unit or hire a contractor to build the house to the specifications. The choice is usually shaped by the lead time to move-in, desire for customization, available capital, and skillset among others.                          HCI is No Different Choosing a hyperconverged infrastructure is no different. The most common deployment models that have emerged are appliance and ready node. Both are very different in ease of use, resource optimization, operational simplicity, and insights. Below VMware’s mapping for vSAN partners indicate the differentiated ...

The impact of the COVID pandemic is being felt in all areas of our lives. The fact that we now have restrictions and/or guidance regarding where we can go and when redefines what it means to "go to work." At first glance, one may say that with different levels of "shut down," the world has slowed if not stopped. In some aspects, yes, this is the case. At the same time, more demands are being placed on information technology infrastructure than at any other time in its short history. This means that the custodial responsibilities around IT are expanding at an accelerated rate. "Organizations that can expect increased demand during ...

As a long-time partner with Cisco, Hitachi has developed the Hitachi Storage Connector for Cisco UCS Director since August 2015. Long before the announcement of  Cisco and Hitachi Adaptive Solutions for Converged Infrastructure Cisco Validated Design, Hitachi has partnered with Cisco on a plethora of integrations in an effort to leverage tools administrators have come to trust from Cisco and Hitachi. Cisco UCS Director is one such example. It is an excellent way of enabling system administrators to perform centeralized management, monitoring, and reporting of Cisco UCS domains. It allows you to create and configure Fabric Interconnects, Chassis, Blade Servers, ...

For years Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) has enabled our customers to deploy both Virtualized and Application specific architectures such as Oracle, SAP HANA, and other Big Data applications with ease and predictable performance. With the success of those solutions and associated architecture pieces, many customers have requested the availability of additional compute nodes for use in their own application specific deployment. Doing so while leveraging the same ease and support they have come to expect with our UCP offerings. In comes the Hitachi Unified Platform Bare Metal offering. With capabilities that support everything you have come to know ...

I recently encountered a cluster of customers who were dealing with datastore space management issues. They were evaluating/engineering an architecture around VMware vSphere vVols but wanted to get their existing VMFS datastores spring-cleaned. In this part 1, I’ll address vCenter datastore alarms/alerts they were dealing with and in part 2 , I’ll address the steps required if you want to verify automatic unmap for VMFS6 datastores down to unmap I/Os and in part 3, what we provided to enable them with some UNMAP powercli automation for their existing VMFS 5 datastores. I'll also share some insights on how customers are dynamically reclaiming ...

January 1, 2020 ushered in the dawn of a new decade and with it, myriad dreamy-eyed technology predictions and trends. If you’re like me, they may have left you a bit exhausted and disillusioned. Maybe you’re still scratching your head wondering what to make of it all?   As I parse fantasy from reality, three trends emerge not only for their impact on infrastructure operations but also for the promise of a better path forward.  1.      Hybrid Cloud Environments Increase Cloud computing continues to grow with an expected uptick in private and hybrid cloud deployments this year. Enterprises need to build solutions that take advantage of on-premises ...

A car is a car, right? It gets you from point A to point B. So, why do have a variety of automobiles such as hatchback, sedan, SUV, trucks. Because, each one serves a different purpose. The sedan is good for grocery trips or driving kids to the soccer field. However, heavy-duty all-wheel-drive trucks are suitable for driving on rugged terrains or for moving stuff. Enterprise IT is no different. Hyperconverged, three-tier IT with dedicated compute, storage, networking components or public cloud have their utility for organizations. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solutions such as Hitachi’s UCP HC improve market responsiveness and operational ...
