The digital transformation journey is critical in meeting evolving business and market requirements for many companies. Businesses are in the process of storing and leveraging data at an unprecedented rate. This stored data is key to insights that enhance customer experience, gain competitive advantage, and solve other complex business problems. Accidental or malicious threats can affect data access and threaten the business, including data corruption, system failures, natural disasters, and ransomware attacks. To effectively address these scenarios as quickly and cost-effectively as possible requires multiple approaches to data protection.
Data protection approaches include backup, snapshot copies, clones, remote replication, high availability clustering, and ransomware. The typical enterprise uses most if not all of these tools. And, which product is used is dependent on the criticality of the data, further complicating the situation. This multi-point product approach ends up increasing complexity, costs, and risks.

Good article, it’ll be interesting to see the next gen of data governance/lineage tools. I have seen the same thing in my company that the article points out, there are definitely some big gaps. In my case it’s because our chief data officer is more concerned about just getting all our lineage documented using expensive tools just so we can put a check mark that it’s all documented, instead of focusing on what we’re documenting how we can do it more efficiently and actually make it useful.
