Ops Center Protector version 7.7 introduced several new features for data protection and availability including the capability to allow snapshots on the tertiary site in a global-active device (GAD) 3DC with failover environment. This blog shows you how to configure the setup so that snapshots work in this type of environment.   The 3-2-1 backup is an ever-green backup and recovery method that ensures data is protected and available when needed. The basic concept of this strategy is having three copies (one primary and two backups) of the production data. We can achieve this with a 3DC setup with failover. However, there could be a scenario where ...

Migrating GAD Pairs Non-disruptively using GAD   Introduction This blog shows how to migrate global-active device (GAD) pairs from a Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform F1500 (VSP F1500) storage system to a VSP E1090 storage system non-disruptively. This migration was tested in a lab environment with microcode 80-06-93-00/80 (VSP F1500) and 93-07-01-80/00 (VSP E1090). Environment The migration environment consists of: ·        Source GAD: 2x VSP F1500 ·        Target GAD: 2x VSP E1090 ·        Quorum: 1x G600 ·        One RHEL host ·        FC ...

Introduction At Hitachi Vantara, we are always searching for ways to make sure that our storage products are fault tolerant and highly available. Although Amazon Web Services (AWS) availability zone outages are rare, every organization should be prepared in case an outage occurs. My team wondered what would happen to Global-Active-Device (GAD) Cloud Quorum if an availability zone went down. After running a few tests, we found that the quorum experienced a blockage on the Virtual Storage Platform (VSP), while the host I/O remained unaffected. Also, the blockage automatically resolved after the availability zone was restored. We then wondered ...

Introduction What exactly does Global-active device (GAD) cloud quorum do, and who is it for? We will answer both questions by showing you a real-life customer use case where GAD cloud quorum is the perfect solution to address all the customer’s issues with their current environment. After providing an introduction to the standard GAD implementations and the issues that can arise, we’ll show you a side-by-side comparison of the customer’s implementation with and without GAD cloud quorum. If you use, or are interested in GAD, but are limited by a physical quorum disk, read about the progress of GAD quorum options and how the new options make GAD more flexible ...

Introduction As cloud technologies continue to expand, it’s important that your business leverages cloud technologies to ensure high availability for your products. Although having a physical storage system serve as a quorum at a third site increases redundancy, using global-active device cloud quorum gives you access to more sites increasing the availability of your solution. Additionally, you no longer need to pay for maintenance and deployment of the third storage system because all computing resources are hosted in the cloud and you are only charged on-demand for hardware usage. Global-Active Device Cloud Quorum Global-active device cloud quorum is ...

The digital transformation journey is critical in meeting evolving business and market requirements for many companies. Businesses are in the process of storing and leveraging data at an unprecedented rate. This stored data is key to insights that enhance customer experience, gain competitive advantage, and solve other complex business problems. Data is now a businesses' most critical asset, and the loss of access can negatively affect the bottom line. Impacts can include direct loss of revenue, missed business opportunities, loss of customer confidence, damage to brand integrity, and more. Business suffers when systems are down and data is unavailable. ...

Previously ( VMware protection in Hitachi Data Instance Director - Part 1: Selection ) I wrote about the options provided for selecting Virtual Machines via the HDID user interface. This is a great introduction to show off the capabilities of what HDID makes possible, but what if you're a DevOps type and clicking buttons isn't really "your thing"? Well, thankfully there's the HDID REST API, and even more helpfully the HDID SDK. n this blog post I'll go through the required API calls to create the ESX node and use it to build a Policy that selects Virtual Machines by id, name and tag. I'll also try and follow up each blog post with ...

Hitachi Vantara has had a long and successful partnership with VMware, with many integration points between our products and the VMware ecosystem. At the center of these integrations is the acknowledgement that VMware administrators want to manage their data and infrastructure from within the familiar VMware environment, and not have to jump between different tools and interfaces to complete their job functions. This partnership extends to data protection and copy data management. Not all data, and therefore not all virtual machines, have the same value to your organization, so ideally you would prefer to use the right tools that meet the availability, ...
