To make sure that the introduction of SVP3A doesn’t degrade the performance of common storage management tasks, we measured the performance of a set of common storage management tasks by using Storage Navigator. This blog illustrates the performance of Storage Navigator running on the new, enhanced SVP3A hardware compared to the performance running on the existing SVP3 hardware.   Test Procedure   To ensure that there was no performance degradation between SVP3 and SVP3A, we performed a common set of storage management tasks using Storage Navigator on SVP3 and SVP3A with the default configuration and with a modified configuration. ...

There seems to be some confusion about the difference between SCSI-FCP and the enhancements of FC-NVMe. Let's start at the beginning for a quick recap. Both FC-NVMe and SCSI-FCP use the Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP). Fibre Channel standards are still enforced, the frame layout, and mapping of each into FCP is still the same, and the payload of a Fibre Channel frame is still a little over 2k (2112 bytes) regardless of which protocol uses FCP. So where is the difference? The difference between FC-NVMe and SCSI-FCP lies within the Fibre channel frame in the contents of the “Optional headers, Commands, and Data Payload”. However, the architecture and ...

Hitachi’s all-new enterprise storage product, the Virtual Storage Platform ( VSP) 5600  series storage system, proves that it is best-in-class! Additionally, the VSP 5600 NVME storage system broke the record for low latency, achieving 39µs. Along with setting a record for low latency, the hardware design has eight 9’s of availability, which is 99.999999%. In an FC/SCSI environment, the VSP 5600 SAS SSD storage system also achieved a leading rate of  33 Million IOPS . When this latency is compared to competitive offerings, Hitachi reigns: IBM FlashSystem 9500 = Under 50 µ s latency Dell EMC PowerMax = Under 100 µ s latency NetApp AFF A900 ...

Hitachi’s all-new enterprise storage product, the Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) 5600 storage system,   out-performed the previous peak of 21M IOPS (which was achieved with the VSP 5500 storage system) and yet again logged best-in-class performance! Our lab tests confirm its superiority with peak performance hitting a massive 33 million IOPS. This measurement was achieved using a 100%   Random 8KB Read Cache Hit  workload generated by the industry-standard benchmarking tool, Vdbench. When this performance is compared to competitive offerings, Hitachi reigns more than 2x: IBM Flash System 9500R = Up to 16M IOPS (4K Block size) Dell EMC Power ...

Introduction Data in Place allows the current generation of VSP 5000 controllers to be upgraded to next generation of controllers without having to do a data migration. In a traditional data migration scenario the new generation controllers have to be installed, new drive boxes also have to be installed, then the new controllers and drives have to be configured, and finally the data migration has to be done.  These activities are identified as activities 1 2 3 4 on the data migration scenario (Figure 1 left side) While in a Data in Place scenario (Figure 1 rifgt side) the process is less expensive and much simpler as new drives boxes are not needed, no ...

Adaptive Data Reduction (ADR) is a feature on the Hitachi storage systems that reduces the size of data to store, effectively increasing the usable capacity on the array. There are two data reduction methods: 1) Compression and 2) Deduplication and Compression. These methods can be enabled heterogeneously on a per volume basis. Before the introduction of the VSP 5200 and VSP 5600 models, ADR was performed by software in the storage system controllers. New technology was introduced on the VSP 5200/5600 platforms to move this operation to dedicated hardware: Compression Accelerator Module. The new module offloads compression processing from the storage system ...

Introduction Hitachi’s new Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) E590 and E790 combine the fast NVMe protocol with advanced processing power and sophisticated cache architecture to deliver the highest I/O performance available in a 2U form factor. In this post we will examine the industry-leading performance of the 2U VSP E Series arrays. Before we compare the “hero” performance numbers measured on VSP E590 and VSP E790 to other platforms, let us begin with a few details about the data:   The competitive hero numbers are well-informed estimates based on publicly-shared data. All hero numbers represent 100% random read cache hits (best-case performance). ...

Its 2021, and I think we should be done compromising.  2020 was the year of getting by, but this will be the year of moving past.  For many companies, that will mean addressing the infrastructure investments that were postponed due to Covid.  Others are building their new-normal datacenters with work from home playing an integral role.  All of them are interested in proven availability, powerful security, and predictable value. For midrange customers in particular, 2021 should be the year of moving past compromises.  These customers have had to choose between Enterprise features and Entry budgets for much longer than the nightmare we know as 2020.  The midrange ...

As you are planning to migrate your SAP ECC and BW applications to the latest SAP HANA based applications (S/4HANA and BW/4HANA), the first question in your mind is: How can I harness the full value from the migration to get better performance for SAP applications using the next generation infrastructure and increase ROI?    SAP customers who want to grow and accelerate their business, remove inefficiencies, and take full advantage of many new compelling features in SAP HANA should move forward with migration as far in advance of the deadline of end-of-support for non-HANA based SAP applications as possible, because of the long time required to plan ...

Leveraging the best of our Hitachi Solutions for Databases to improve your overall Oracle RAC performance and availability Hitachi VSP 5500 is the king of performance & scale in today's data storage industry. And for many of our customer, a vital component for high performance Oracle database environment. There are multiple ways to construct a large-scale high-performance Oracle RAC database, including with possibly fewer and more powerful compute nodes, or a larger number of less powerful compute nodes. With fewer compute nodes, it is often less communication overhead among Oracle RAC nodes. Such an environment is also more flexible for batch ...
