can can anyone suggest how to migrate the data from IBM DS 4800 to Hitachi G400 storage box. The luns that are given to host from DS 4800 was multiple luns which was combined as meta volume at IBM AIX lpar Hosts.
The two standard ways to migrate are: 1) use UVM to virtualize the DS4800 behind G400 and then use Mobility to migrate the data onto internal G400 capacity, and 2) use host mirroring or copying to migrate data.
i agree, IBM storage integration can be done by UVM. but please suggest me with more clarification how the data mobility can be happen. what software will be used there?. i suspect through HTsM we can migrate the data.but is there any other way to migrate the data with in the array from external volume to internal volumes?.
There isn't much to it. First you need to make the G400 has a "proxy" of the original storage to the host. That's the hard part because you need to stop the host, remove the DS luns from it, capture them by the G400 and present back to the host as luns provided by the G.
After that is done and you have the host back on, moving the data around (external to internal or whatever) is a just a matter of choice on the Mobility tab of HDVM.
This also implies you have validated all versions and also went through the UVM manuals.
i would consider a host based Migration, because you would normaly have no downtime and you can avoid a lot of configuration Tasks for the DS virtualization. For all the Migrations we have done so far, we used Virtualization based Migration only for Windows Systems. VM, AIX, UNIX, Solaris always Host based.
Totally agree. Nowadays, Windows (and some old nix boxes without some form o LVM), are the only pain as far as migrating data is concern. All other are simply done via the OS.
