What is software-defined storage? and what are people doing to 'define' it?

As 2013 closes, I wonder to myself what does 2014 have in "store" for us. Is it time for the rise of the software-defined storage era? How do others see storage evolving?

Today it's about file sharing and syncing and being able to hold onto data forever, but what about the management of all that data and hardware? I'm sure IT departments go nuts, what are they doing to help their cause and save the company valuable money or getting the bang for their buck? Will we continue seeing the battle between public and private cloud solutions and who will be the victorious one in the end...

Just interesting thoughts I've had and would love to hear/discuss with others.
