There is any best practices to do "Discard zero data" on pools?
Thanks and regards.
Depends on a few factors
- the volumes that are mapped to hosts, what kind of FS are they using, (NTFS?, then yes you may need to do it often)
- how often are your FS deleting files?
- How much have you overprovisioned the Pool. If your overprovisioning is 100% (no overprovisioning) then you do not need to run. If you have overprovisioned by 200 to 300% then do it frequently
- Watch the used% of the pool. If the value is pretty less then you do not need to do it
Just to be sure I would like to know the above points are for running Zero Page reclaim for DP optimization, correct me if I am wrong. In my setup we have HUS150 and luns has published to it to windows 2012 R2 and those luns are used in Media agent server to work as disk library for commvault. Now when commvault delets the backup data as per my knowledge and working priciples for windows 2012 R2 , storage should receive unmap command automactically from hosts and once you run DP optimization with option reclaim zero pages we should get the space back in our pool. But we tried two times the same things but it did not worked
Any help is much appreciated
I agree with Bhaskar Ramashankar.
addtionally, I recommand to do zeropage reclaim after migation from thick volume to thin volume with replication solution.
